This is my most favourite book I’ve ever read now. I just loved every single thing about it. I will forever be completely mad for this world and these characters. Thank you Rebecca Yarros! I can’t wait for all the books to come!! Xaden is the dark Mr. Darcy I never knew I needed.

Oh my god, I want book 2 and I want it now!

First of all, an adult spicy how to train your dragon? Sold.

Fully developed, well-rounded characters? Absolutely.

Semi-predictable plot but still worth reading? Definitely.

Edit: Rebecca Yarros has come out with a statement that is in support of the Apartheid enforced on Palestine by Israel. I will not remove this review, but I want to change this rating to a 1 star and a headsup instead.

I'm conflicted if this is secretly somewhat pro-war, pro-military hinted. The author calls herself a ''military brat'' and her husband has been deployed before, which is why I feel somewhat uneasy with some of the wording and sentiments throughout the book.

This book was entertaining, I’ll give it that. But I do not, on any level, understand the popularity and hype for it.

Fourth Wing is fine. It’s not amazing, it’s not bad, it’s fine. Like, THIS is sold out everywhere??

The modern speak in a fantastical story really took me out. I don’t care that there is an in-universe explanation for it. It was awful. The FMC is try hard sassy and over dramatic. Fortunately, she is a relatively intelligent character, which I find rare in these types of books.

The entire concept of the plot and world is fascinating. I just wish the romance and high school drama weren’t shoehorned in. The battle and action scenes were great. I really found myself invested in this world.

I genuinely cannot remember the MMC’s name. The romance covered too many popular Booktok tropes for it to feel natural.

I would die for the dragons.

Predictable but fun; world building is ok

When the entire internet is collectively freaking out about a book and selling it out at every retailer under the sun, I’m going to have high expectations. And Fourth Wing just didn’t live up to the hype for me.

Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at basically-child-soldier camp. I love a fun trope-y read. I honestly even kind of liked how I was able to predict the entire plot as it happened. (I promise I’m not being shady, I really did enjoy that aspect.) Also, disability rep where the characters are accommodated for instead of having to overcome being disabled? We LOVE to see it. I’m stoked to read the sequel because I found the story, the world, and the characters really interesting. I just also found them to be rather one dimensional and at times lazily written ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Lots of the world building and characterization is told instead of shown. Violet and Xaden’s relationship is way more insta-love than enemies to lovers like it was billed. As some other reviews point out, some of the most interesting character dynamics, like Violet’s relationships with her mom and sister, are glossed over or only really spoken about based on what happened before the story begins. There’s a lot of potential here, and I hope more of that is explored in the next book.

If you’re into this kind of new adult romantasy (although this one felt way more YA than adult), I’d still recommend Fourth Wing. It’s a fun time, but if you spend any time on the internet, temper your expectations.
