Is this a perfectly written book? Nope. Was it a definite five star read? Hell yeah! Love an author who is not afraid to kill people off, and if you combine that danger and tension with magic and dragons and an amazing slow-burn romance enemies-to-lovers story, then I’m all on board!

It took a really long time to connect with this story, but when I did, my goodness, I got hooked.

Violet is such an amazing character, her growth throughout the entire story is one of the best character arcs I've ever read. The plot is great, full of twists, great friendships, magic and cool dragons. How can you ask for more than that?

Are there any weird little things? Yes. Why the hell do they need to bond with a dragon to write with a pen? What kind of power is that? Why are the sex scenes so…detailed? We get it, sex is good, we don't need to read every thing they feel.

The ending was brilliant! I can't wait to read the second book.

Wowowowow hunger games x divergent x game of thrones + steamy slow burn romance
I was laughing, squealing, swooning, gasping, and on the edge of my seat the ENTIRE TIME. The second I finished, I wished I could rewind my life a week to experience reading it for the first time again. The writing isn’t good, but the story makes up for that in my opinion.
It was so special to read a book with a bad-ass disabled character (I have a connective tissue disorder like Violet). And I think her disability makes the story so much more interesting, complex, and relatable than all the other dystopian-type novels with women main characters who are physically strong and clearly capable from the start.
Also, the romantic plot line is WOW. I wasn’t expecting it to get so sexually explicit, but I’m def not mad about it lol — just a heads up in case you aren’t into that.

A brilliant mix of dystopian YA and fantasy (think divergent in a game of thrones world) with war, training, magic, dragons, death and sex.
A mostly loveable main character (which in YA/dystopian is hard to pull off sometimes - especially when they’re a head-strong proud character).
In fact, all the characters are well defined and complex, and the plot(s) are cleverly woven, giving away the perfect amount of information at the perfect time.
I definitely wasn’t expecting so much smut in this (there’s 2 fully explicit and long sex scenes in there) but it’s done well and doesn’t feel cheap or unnecessary.
Occasionally, there are some lines that fall a bit short and feel cringey but the majority of interactions are witty, sexy and well-written.
I really couldn’t put this book down.
Would 100% recommend this and the only disappointing thing about it, is that it ended on a brilliant cliff-hanger, and, as I read it the year it came out, I doubt I’ll be reading the sequel any time soon.

Look. Is this well-written? Not really, and it gets quite bad at some point.

But is this entertaining? YES.

It hits all the beats of a fun YA and I thoroughly enjoyed myself reading it.

Sometimes, you don't need a literary masterpiece. You just need dragons.

I don't say this lightly - this is my new favorite book. Every scene - even the slower discussion scenes - is tense. The way everything was written is so beautiful. There's a perfect mix of everything from epic dragons, to conspiracy, to spicy scenes. Characters are as complex and complicated as the world they live in. The excerpts at the beginning of each chapter add so much to the world building and I was absolutely captivated each page. I cannot recommend this book enough.
