Why is no one talking about the blatant racism in this?? I thought I was being unreasonable being disgusted by the descriptions of people from different races because no one mentioned it in any of their 5 star reviews of this “masterpiece”.
This was an almost dnf for me, saved only by my own curiosity of knowing where this character would end up and if it would follow the same author’s demise.

as a depressed baddie, there was a lot in this book that made me feel finally seen. however, as a baddie of color, i despised the racist remarks and that took away from my enjoyment of it.

It's a classic for a reason. I loved the prose, the honesty, and even the potentially unreliable narrator as she strove to make sense of a world steeped in patriarchy.

top 10 books that have shaped my being for better or for worse. I've read The Bell Jar twice now, and i have a communal copy i lend out to friends that i don't think will end up in a hospital upon reading it. Esther Greenwood just like me fr fr

There is so much to say about this book that I can’t speak much of it at all. In indescribable ways, it is both hyper relatable, and also mind altering. It follows the downwards mental spiral of the main character, Esther, in a way unlike anything else. To make the mundane seem insane and the chaos of madness so cohesive and understandable is the beauty of Sylvia Plath.
