It was incredibly boring, not made for an adult demographic.

In this book, King gives a perfect example for as to why authors should stick to their usual genres. This was good for those who don't like and/or don't read fantasy. King does well to stick to the classic fantasy archetypes, but forgot to add anything even remotely original. This is the entire plot:
Spoiler The antagonist is a stereotypical corrupt court wizard who manipulates and meddles and makes a puppet king out of the younger prince. The main prince is framed for assassinating the king and put in a jail cell. Then the main prince escapes in a way that's designed to seem "clever" and proves his innocence and the evil wizard escapes.
Given enough time, I could give a long list of how many stories that description applies to, all of which are probably more interesting. It hardly matters, though, because the name 'Stephen King' is on the cover in big bold letters. So no matter what, people will read it and love it.
Don't get me wrong; there's nothing wrong with King's writing. The book is well written, but the plot is one of the dullest and most stereotypical I've ever seen. And if you changed a few small details, (like dragon head to tiger head and court wizard to court physician) then it wouldn't even be a fantasy anymore.
