Olivia is kidnapped by two men who hold her for five years.  The depraved men always wear masks (A gorilla & A jackal) and their proclivities range from rape to cannibalism.  Olivia is broken but sees an opportunity to escape and takes it, rescuing two other girls (Jen & Lucy) that were being held too and killing one of her captors.  As the agonizing investigation dredges everything that's happened in the last five years of captivity, Olivia is trying to move forward, Lucy is on the talk show circuit, & Jen is a shell of her former self.  One of the captors (jackal) is still on the loose and will stop at nothing to have Olivia back.  Creepy, disturbing, & captivating book with great character development of Olivia's journey from being beat down, attacked, & abused and back home with her father and the obsession the jackal has with her and will do anything to possess her again.

Thank you Netgalley for the copy of this book.

I was excited about this book from the first few pages. It takes place in the same area I grew up in Canada.
This book is by far one of the best suspense/thrillers I've ever read. I got through it in a few short hours, it was THAT good.
I loved that it focused on Olivia rather than the 'bad guy' and the investigation into him. The last few pages were so intense, so scary. I was sitting up straight and powering through just to find out what happens. No other book has ever had me so on edge.
The twists were so shocking and exciting, the entire book was a very real horror, and I loved every second of it.

The writing was awful. No one needs a paragraph of the character basically repeating themselves in differently worded sentences. The mystery was okay but landed flat.

Doll House by John Hunt has got to be one of my favorite Horror books right now. It was creepy, scary, horrific, sad, heartbreaking, funny, but mostly disturbing. The descriptions of torture and pain were well written. There was a lot of clever ways to describe certain things throughout the story. It grabbed me so much I finished the book in a day. This isn't for the faint of heart & after reading this, I will definitely be watching my own back just a little bit closer than I was before.

I could not finish this book. The characters were flat, and even scenes that should have shocked and horrified instead seemed dull and lifeless, largely because the show/tell balance was so skewed. The writing was clunky, with unparallel constructions and garden-path sentences that pulled me out of the story.

I don’t normally write reviews but I really felt I needed to with this book. It’s one of the best books I’ve read in a long time, it was fast paced throughout and I genuinely couldn’t put it down. I did honestly think I’d discovered who the Jackal was halfway through the book but the twist at the end was great. Sad in parts but extremely enjoyable. I will definitely be looking out for any future books from John Hunt. 👍
