I didn't love this as much as everyone else but I did enjoy the story.

I just finished rereading A SONG OF WRAITHS AND RUIN (Feb. 2022) and it's still a solid 5-star book for me, and I'd probably jump up that rating if more stars were available. Seriously. I really love this book.
Original Review Below:
It's been several hours since I finished A SONG OF WRAITHS AND RUIN by Roseanne A. Brown, and it's still haunting me. I have to say, this may be my favorite YA fantasy of 2020.

I feel like not enough people are talking about this book or have been talking about this book and they need to be. It is inspired by West African folklore and I guess it was pitched as Aladdin & Jasmine, but if they had to kill each other - which I had no clue until I was looking at reviews. I was going to say it had very Aladdin vibes. The narrators were fantastic. The story was so easy to get immersed in fully. I didn't want to stop listening and I couldn't listen fast enough to consume the story. I thought the second book was already out and my heart broke a little when I discovered it's not out until November. Highly recommend this read for any YA Fantasy fans!

Ok this review will contain spoilers because I honestly just can’t. I was really looking forward to this book and I really, really wanted to love it. But I just… don’t.
Ok first, this book peaked my interest with the competition and boy having to kill girl to save his sister and girl having to kill boy to save her mother. Cool, cool. But then….
But then this book got boring quick. The competition wasn’t interesting. The coincidental meetings. The saving each other. It was all so simple and uninteresting. It took me forever to get through this book because I kept not wanting to pick it up. It became a chore.
So one of my biggest problems was consistency. First the Sentinels was fully and completely loyal to the Kestrel. But not completely because once she died it was discovered that they were loyal to the Vizier. But when he was found to be treasonous they arrested him. But then they were really loyal to Fraid, Karina’s friend that was like a brother to her. I mean… can we just pick one that the military is loyal to and stick with it. Why are their loyalties changing all the damn time. And I know it could just be me, but I knew Fraid was the one responsible for the Kestrel’s death the entire book and the way Karina discovered it was pretty lame. So basically at the end of the book once the barrier falls he starts acting weird and placating her and it just clicks in her mind??? Yeah ok!

A promising start that sets the stage for the rest of this story.

This book was exactly what I needed during this rough time. Rosie Brown's debut had everything: intricate rich world building, believable characters, action, intrigue, and humor in all the right places. I bought this book specifically for the Diversity is Lit Book Club's July book of the month and I cannot be happier that it was picked. I loved every second and was racing from the climax to the end because of so many OMG moments. :) I can't believe I have to now wait for Book 2!!

I really enjoyed how the author really carried the story along.
