I read this for school, and considering the circumstances it wasn't terrible. I felt that there were a lot of missed opportunities on character development, and therefore left me feeling unsatisfied.

Read it for a book group. Not my favorite. Nonetheless good intro (through fiction) to the Cultural Revolution.

Such a rich and satisfying book, even with that devastating, unexpected conclusion. A book I couldn't put down and I'm so disappointed that it had to end at all.

This was a lovely story about two city boys sent to a small village as part of Mao's 're-education' program. I loved how the thought they could 'improve' the girl so that she would be good enough for them, then she ended up going off to find something better.
