This was everything I love about picture books. A little bit of magic and a very relatable story about family. Gorgeous illustrations.

WOW, what a magical story! I really loved it, though I wish that the parents would have understood what it meant for the girl to push the button. They could have expected what happened next. I would have done the same. I love that the girl finds a magical elevator button and has tons of adventures with jungles and more. I am not sure how I felt about the ending, on the one hand YAY, on the other hand.... eh. A bit conflicted.
The art was just outstanding and so gorgeous.
All in all, read this one.

Wow. Just… completely amazing. I kept this way longer than I should I have, read it at least five times, and shared it with multiple people at work (who also adored it). This is my favorite Dan Santat/Minh Lê collaboration. It has a graphic novel feel, both in the way the pages are mapped out, but also because it’s longer than your regular picture book, (Many of the pages are just illustrations.)

I LOVE the page where Iris pushes all the buttons. Her rage is palpable and you can  feel the release she gets from acting out a little bit in frustration. I also love how the parents react: obviously irked, but nothing overboard., which, to me sends the message that hey, sometimes you act up or do something bad, but you are still loved. The pages where Iris, and then Iris and her brother, go on an adventure are incredible; another great montage is when she discovers her imaginary portal to other worlds in the first place.

So anyway, yeah. I love this book. I checked it out from the Mid-Mississippi Regional Library System through interlibrary loan from the Mississippi Library Commission.

I feel really bad giving this book 3 stars. I'll own that it is in large part to loving "Drawn Together" so much. I was comparing this book to that. Shouldn't do it, but I do.

It is a beautiful story of a young one who loves "pushing buttons" on an elevator. Who doesn't love that? But what happens when an unexpected one comes along and......pushes them instead? It's terrible to share. So when our young protagonist comes across an elevator button which is taped to a wall and introduced to a huge new world of imagination and wonder.....a choice is to be reached

Share the joy and experience? Or keep it to one's self?!

Every sibling combo can relate to the struggles of sharing. I know I could!

Would be interesting to have students describe what is happening in the book. I admit, I had to go back a couple of times myself. The babysitter threw me a bit.

As usual, Dan Santat's illustrations are AMAZING. Love this collaboration, which is a celebration of imagination and siblings.

The story doesn't exactly work. And our main character is kind of bratty but really just once. But the art is so cute. And the text words. I'm just hoping this pair of writer and artist have a few more books in them to do together.
