I actually gave this book a 3.5. It was good and I loved the back story but I feel like there could have been so much more

DNF. The books seemed so promising but half way through nothing has progressed in the story. I don’t get a lot of time to read so I have to be very particular with which books I spend time on.

I really try my hardest not to DNF books, because I like to see them through, but this book was almost unbearable. It was very boring for me. I actually started this book almost a year ago, and put it down for a while because I was struggling to get through it. I picked it back up this year to see if I’d have a better experience but unfortunately, I did not. A lot of writing, a lot of text, a lot of fluff, for the story to go absolutely nowhere. There was so much potential with the storyline: a multi generational family of black women who do voodoo/black magic and who have been cursed, that every man they love will die. It just really fell short to me. The cover alone drew me into this book but unfortunately it was not enough.

Dnf 2-something % thru.
I understand that the ending is going to include this miraculous understanding between family members, probably. But Victoria, the mother, treating her 17-year-old daughter, Nickie , like she’s a 12-year-old is infuriating. Instead of honesty and talking things through, she’s going to sell her daughters camera, limit her phone plan, take away her computer, institute rules about Nickie wearing mascara (wtf), Etc. etc. just to keep her daughter in the dark about a secret Victoria plans on telling her anyway. I’m done.

I feel a little mixed up on this book - it has ALL the components to be exactly right for me, but the execution just didn’t land. I believe this was supposed to be a different take on a practical magic type story, but make it black and make it voodoo, which I am HERE for. Give me a generational curse on magic women in every flavor, color and texture a hundred different times, I’m buying it. That’s not the issue I have here.

I’m order to not give spoilers, I’ll say that I wanted the story to be like the cover - rich and layered and interesting, but it ended being muddled and a bit flat.
