The book suffers a bit from being the second one in a trilogy. There isn't really a clear start to the story (even though it is about a dope smuggler being found dead) and there isn't really a clear end. The front story of the Thai girls was interesting but didn't hold me in the same way as the front story in the first book. The back story, however, continued filling in the gaps and we get to know a bit more about Jana Berzelius. I find it interesting though that the women in this book really come out badly. None of them is particularly likable which isn't really something I would have expected from a female writer.

When a Thai girl overdoses while smuggling drugs, all signs point to an elusive narcotics trail. With a connection to Jana Berzelius, mysterious prosecutor who has just started putting together bits of her past, she must work to kill the man responsible before he reveals who she really is …

Marked for Revenge, the second novel following prosecutor Jana Berzelius, by Emelie Schepp was a book I was eager to get my hands on. Having read (and enjoyed!) Schepp's Marked For Life, I couldn’t wait to get more of Jana's backstory. I was not disappointed. Schepp provides much more to the story in book two, of what I am assuming, will be a trilogy.

I, once again, loved the character development of Jana. As she becomes more entrenched into discovering bits of her old lifestyle, her character became even more complex. In fact, Schepp seems to excel at developing complex characters. Even the secondary characters in this police procedural have story arcs that intertwine. However, like I felt in the first novel, I found that there was way too much information involving the characters and I found it hard to get lost in the story. I was too busy trying to figure out who everyone was and what everyone was doing to really lose myself in the plot.

I also found, on a technical note that the digital copy formatted strange on my Kindle; this also disrupted my reading.

Overall, I enjoyed the story as a follow up but feel people would struggle to read it as a standalone. I would strongly encourage any reader to read the first book before attempting this one.

Yet another page-turner of a Nordic crime novel.

Marked for Revenge takes place not long after the events of Marked for Life. Jana Berzelius, our low-key savage prosecutor, has her encounter with Danilo fresh within her mind. Jana’s relationship with her father, also a prosecutor, remains estranged. Drugs are constantly being smuggled into Sweden. Agencies relating to crime are being restructured, causing uncertainties within the Norrköping police squad.

This time round, the Norrköping police investigate an attempt at smuggling heroin across the Swedish border through a train. An attempt deemed as failure as the capsule leaked within the smuggler’s body, succumbing her to death through overdose. Further digging by the squad reveals the drug ring within the country is now supposedly run by a different individual, known as the Old Man.

For Jana, Danilo is the key to her past. Unravelling her past would endanger her reputation and potentially fracture her relationship with certain individuals. Suspecting that there is corruption amongst the high-ranked individuals within the national crime agency, Jana decides to go on her own in hunting down Danilo once and for all. The recent smuggling case and Jana’s chase of Danilo would eventually entwine.
