This is a "strong female protagonist" horror story, similar in tone to A Quiet Place. In this instance, the evil "other" invading Earth can't be viewed, so people have learned to go outdoors only when neccessary and only when blindfolded.
There is a good buildup of tension in the book and a few good jump scares. Others have pointed out that coincidences abound, but that didn't ruin my enjoyment of it.
I think the author's strength is in the characterizations. The characters are well fleshed out. They are suitably sick and tired of being forced together in a small space with no real contact with the outside world. Personalities clash and the constant stress of danger causes tensions to rise.
I feel like anyone who enjoys apocalyptic thrillers and alien/monster invasion horror would enjoy it.

This was a quick read mainly because I was caught up in the story and wanted to find out what happened and if Malorie, Boy, and Girl got where they were going. I wondered how I might have fared in that situation.

Preferred the movie (slightly) to the book though neither was outstanding. Book focused more on the protagonist's kids where the movie accelerated the apocalypse and subsequent years.

Neither the book nor the movie really explain how the insanity causing (alien?) creatures would be so ubiquitous that simply opening your eyes outside would be instantly fatal.

And a book set in 2014 should probably realize that GPS devices exist and could be used for navigation.

This book was a WILD RIDE ! I don't know if I really love it but I know that I don't hate it. In fact , I like it so much !!
It's creepy and sad, but sweet at other moments. But again , A WILD RIDE this was and It's been a long time since I felt this way . Tired in a good way . As If I was with Malorie, rowing that boat .

I must admit I went into this book a bit skeptical. While it was highly recommended by a dear and trusted kindred spirit friend, the hype from those who flow in the mainstream was pretty heavy. I'm so glad my friend's recommendation was spot on!

What a great book! I love the premise, it really gets you thinking all sorts of "what ifs". The story was highly entertaining, fast paced, and the last two chapters had me up late at night with every muscle in my body full of tension! This is what horror was meant to be like!

for all the fantastic psychological horror, this book ends like a children's book. it's too simple and warm, clearly leading to a second book but making this one sort of a dud in the last stretch. still a good read.
