From https://www.bookbrowse.com/bb_briefs/detail/index.cfm/ezine_preview_number/14539/this-tender-land:
“1932, Minnesota—the Lincoln School is a pitiless place where hundreds of Native American children, forcibly separated from their parents, are sent to be educated. It is also home to an orphan named Odie O'Banion, a lively boy whose exploits earn him the superintendent's wrath. Forced to flee, he and his brother Albert, their best friend Mose, and a brokenhearted little girl named Emmy steal away in a canoe, heading for the mighty Mississippi and a place to call their own.”
“Over the course of one unforgettable summer, these four orphans will journey into the unknown and cross paths with others who are adrift, from struggling farmers and traveling faith healers to displaced families and lost souls of all kinds. With the feel of a modern classic, This Tender Land is an enthralling, big-hearted epic that shows how the magnificent American landscape connects us all, haunts our dreams, and makes us whole.”

A modern classic. I wrote it off in the beginning, often mocking the title with a country twang. It takes a lot to admit when you're wrong, but this is one of those cases where I missed the mark entirely. I'm not usually into these feel-good, homeland type stories, but this makes me think I've been wrong the entire time.
It's 400 pages long, but I didn't want it to end. That says a lot.

Genuinely sad to be done with the vagabonds and their adventures. I could've listened to this for many more hours.

A solid read. There are some clear inspirations for this tale of adventure, which I won't spoil here.
It has all the elements of a great story.

I thought this book was very well written, but a little bit long and has a story that seems to drag on, making it a little hard to maintain interest.
It certainly has a lot of details, with lots of facts about the time period, a very well written historical fiction type of book.

Read it! I absolutely loved everything about this book. Beautifully written and heartbreaking, full of wonderful characters and love, comradery and the search of somewhere to call home. Stunning. Dare I say better than Crawdads....

Four young vagabond orphans, brought together by the pain and suffering, travel the Mississippi River to escape the horrors of the Lincoln Indian Training School in the midst of the Great Depression. If you like stories packed with friendship, hope, and interesting characters, you’ll enjoy This Tender Land. It’s a lovely mix of story and place, and just the right read for a summer evening.
