Not only is this an awesome sequel, I liked it more than the first. When shit happens, it is serious. The sexual tension is superb, the descriptions vivid and even the writing style has improved. I enjoyed Mac from the first book, but now I really like her, and I am impressed with the amounts of abuse she takes. Barrons is still my favourite character. There is a lot of character development, the plot thickens with each chapter, and the world grows ever darker. A good read, one I absolutely devoured. I am keeping this review short because I need to go start reading the next installment. It is just that good.

So many secrets, illusions and lies — who can Mac trust? No-one!

Obtaining the blackest Fae magic book, the Unseelie Sinsar Dubh, is Mac and Barrons priority and they are in for a dangerous action packed ride. Mac is developing a much steelier spine, still gunning for Alina's murderer, and Barrons still gives away very little remaining cool and mysterious:

If I was a minnow and they were sharks, he (Barrons) was one of those yet undiscovered fish that lurk in the deepest, darkest reaches of the ocean where sunlight and man never go.

Quite!

There are some horrendous plot developments and surprising twists too. Some questions are answered but many more questions remain. There isn't a definitive black or white between Fae and humans and I'm loving being immersed in this world.

This series is craic... addicted!

I liked this better than Dark Fever, it was good to 'get to know' Mac better, and to see that she DOES have some badassedness in her after all. And it was excellent to know that Christian MacKeltar works at the University, and he even knew Alina.

I am still as iffy as Mac is about both Barron and Rowena, not to mention the death-by-sex fae :D

Bloodfever
3.5 Stars

Note: This review is for the audiobook narrated by Joyce Bean. I'm getting used to her male voices but Barrons still doesn't sound right.

The intricate world-building, compelling mythology and symbolism together with Mac and Barron's intense hate/love relationship manage to keep my interest going in this series despite its shortcomings.

As in Darkfever, the main problem with Bloodfever is the heroine. Barron's comment that Mac is "a spoiled little girl" is right on the money. She remains the immature, self-absorbed and TSTL twit from the previous book although she has, thankfully, reduced the number of times that she rants on about her hair, clothes and the color pink.

JZB is still an enigma and every new facet revealed makes him even more intriguing. There is something acutely primal about him that is oh so appealing. V'lane, on the other hand, is so smarmy, sleazy and sordid - it is incomprehensible to me that so many reviewers swoon over him.

The writing has improved with fewer non-linear transitions and abrupt chapter endings. Unfortunately, Mac still rambles on incessantly about inconsequential things and her mind wanders at inopportune moments to dwell on supposedly profound insights into human nature (while being tortured, for example). There is also an excessive rehashing of events from book one and it is only halfway through that the plot begins to develop and the action gets underway.

Overall, a slight improvement on the first book and I will continue if only to see if Mac truly becomes worthy of her abilities and to get answers to my unanswered questions.

Badass Mac, I kinda like you (especially when you're eating Unseelie Rhino-boys).
