Ali Hazelwood just gets me. Her writing always has me giggling and kicking my feet. I love the quirkiness. When she pulled out the line about cotton top tamarin plushies I really felt like she wrote that directly to me.

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into her first YA novel but I really really loved it. I was worried that it would seem bland without spice but the tension definitely made up for it. It was honestly perfect. I loved the romance between these two characters I do wish we had gotten just a few more moments between Mal and Nolan. I also found the whole concept of this book super interesting. It was overall a very good book, fast paced and quick read. Dare I say it was my favorite Ali Hazelwood book to date?

3.5⭐️ This was not my favorite Ali Hazelwood book. I LOVED Nolan so much but unfortunately the main character Mallory was the most insufferable human I have ever read in my life. I wanted to rip my hair out everytime we got her inner monologue or really when she talked in general. Which is such a shame because the sexual tension in this book was INSANE. for it being YA and virtually having no spice I was shocked at how much tension there was between the characters. Like your girl was sweating reading some of the scenes 😂😂

Overall I wish I could rate this book higher because it was a great story but sadly I had to dock major points for being so frustrated with the main character 90% of the book.

Mallory is emotionally immature in the most annoying ways. I think I stopped reading to sigh and roll my eyes multiple times throughout this book. Her character is the main reason for this rating. It’s a cute fated mates story.

Maybe my favorite Ali Hazelwood book so far! Loved these characters and their journeys, especially the sisters. Great read.

My thoughts:
- the main character wasn't awful, but gosh girl was soooo dumb half the time
- love interest was highly unrealistic
- was an addicting read
- not a huge fan of the romance in this one
- I was more enthralled with Mallory healing and having a healthy workplace environment
- why was chess so sexual in this?
- overall a light fun fast read

Really enjoyed it! It was heavier on the actual chess than I was expecting and I was really hoping to get to see more at the end. Not my favorite Ali Hazelwood, but still really liked it!
