Fourth Wing is the wildly entertaining New Adult fantasy romance from Rebecca Yarros, and the first in her Emyrean series.

Divergent meets Eragon
This book felt like a repackaging of other YA stories.

The flagrant use of the f-word really took me out of it at times.

It’s my fault for not realizing this was classified as a romance. However, it felt like the author threw away what plot she had in order to write the intimacy.

For a fantasy, this was very light on world building. The author relied heavily on the main character reciting historical facts to calm her nerves.

This story had potential if it had been fleshed out better. I think the romance got in the way of better storytelling.

*SPOILERS AHEAD!

(*Originally read 1st edition & read this new one so, this is considered my 2nd time reading this story)

5⭐️/ 2-3🌶️

I’m sorry, but forget Hogwarts! This book was centered around a war college that had dragons! Being bonded to a dragon that allowed you to use magic and ultimately be a total baddie! YES! PLEASE! Not to mention, having to fight to survive through training and all the exams that could mean life or death was a big deal. For Violet, she was envisioned herself becoming a scribe, after all that was what she had been studying to become for the longest time. Until her mother, a.k.a. the fierce General basically forced her to join the rider quadrant, after all, every Sorrengail was a rider. With elements of danger, action, magic, betrayals, romance, and a whole lot of fantastical things happening, Rebecca Yarros transported me into this world that I wasn’t quickly becoming fascinated with.

Violet Sorrengail was an intelligent, book smart girl who despite her small stature was able to weird other skills such as, her daggers and of course ability to use her mind. You always think the bigger/stronger person is going to come out on top, but sometimes that isn’t always the case. With Violet, she utilized her intellect to make sure she survived and was strong in other areas. Essentially, even with her mother being the General in the army, Violet was kind of an underdog that most people assumed would fall or wanted to kill her as revenge for what her mother did in the war (children of the rebels were also part of the Riders Quadrant, therefore some didn’t like Violet’s family automatically). Not going to lie, when I heard that Violet was small and not the strongest in strength, I wasn’t expecting the level of just how much this person went through. Definitely was worried on multiple occasions for Violet’s well-being, but even through all the rough and tumble of hand to hand combat training, trying to literally survive against not getting killed, Violet was determined to not go down without a fight.

Now, as you could imagine with a story set in a world with dangerous creatures from dragons and gryphons to the war college that trained the most fearsome rider, it was pretty fascinating. Among the dangers lurking around campus was the notable and quite honestly the most formidable was, Xaden Riorson. Xaden wasn’t just a third year rider, he was also wing leader, had a unique signet (ability he had from his bond with his dragon), but he was also the one person Violet’s sister warned him to stay away from. The reason being, Xaden’s father was the leader of the rebellion that occurred many years ago, and Violet’s mom executed him…. Uh oh. Xaden and Violet didn’t like each other at all, with the snarky comments, Xaden’s promise of killing Violet, it was GIVING ENEMIES TO LOVERS FULL FORCE! I don’t go out of my way to look for the “enemies to lovers” trope, but I was happy to read how the trope played out very nicely throughout the book. As much as Violet hated Xaden, she couldn’t help but admire that hunky man, MMMM SEXY!

Now as I was reading, I was getting into the rhythm of the story, and overall getting immersed into the world. The more I read, the more fascinated I became with Violet, Xaden, and some of the other side characters. The world that was created in this book was one that was unlike any I had read, but could definitely see why some people have compared parts of this book as similar to, “Divergent”. Violet was quite the underdog and she continued to not only overcome major obstacles, but also show her fellow squad mates, that she wasn’t weak as they thought her to be.

Once the dragons appeared, I WAS SO FREAKING EXCITED! DUDE THE DRAGONS DON’T MESS AROUND AND I LOVED IT! From the first glimpses of them, to actually seeing the dragons front and center was outstanding! Just by reading, I could imagine it vividly as if I was right in the thick of it all! Truly amazed by these majestic, powerful creatures, I couldn’t stop the goosebumps forming along my arms and back! The Threshing was the moment I was waiting for most, as it not only was a big moment for Violet, but I was so curious to see who she would bond with. I had my predictions on who I thought would be an ideal match for Violet, but nope, I was completely unprepared for the reveal of who ended up being her dragon. In other words, once the dragons came, I WAS FULLY IN IT! I loved how Tairn (Violet’s bonded black dragon a.k.a. the most fearsome/ legendary dragon ever known!) was not only an incredible dragon in his own right, but he was so grumpy and blunt, and I loved his overprotective nature over Violet. Plus, Andarna was the sweetest, most precious dragon that needed to be protected at all costs! That’s my baby right there! I loved the close bond she and Tairn had, it was adorable and gave me “father/daughter” vibes. I cannot express just how much I loved this dragon in particular, they were literally so freaking amazing yet I also loved how the dragons were able to communicate with their riders through their minds! Umm ahem, I would formally like to have a dragon of my own and be able to talk to it telepathically too! I was already intrigued by Violet and the overall plot, but not going to lie once the dragons appeared, everything got even better and oh boy, there was plenty of stuff going down that BLEW MY MIND! Soooo….I could definitely see the hype was well worth it!

I usually always want if not mainly focus on the romantic developments in books I read, but with this book, I was more focused on everything else, but the romance! Don’t get me wrong there was still some romance in here that I very much appreciated, but I wasn’t going out of my way to find it. Instead, I was happily content with watching Violet navigate her way as a new rider, Tairn, Adarna, the rest of the riders, and overall all the amazing things that were happening in the story. I think that speaks to just how well Rebecca Yarros wrote this book in that she literally had me hooked at every page, and chapter. The amount of detail and explanation over the course of the story wasn’t overwhelming, it was explained beautifully. Plus, the dragons were epically awesome! So, while I did love seeing romance play out later in the story, I was just as happy if not more than entertained by the story in its entirety, definitely never a dull moment with this book!

Now, when the romance did appear, best believe I was eating up every morsel between Violet and Xaden! Violet and Xaden were the complete opposites, one being a natural born warrior whereas the other used their bookish smarts to outwit others. Despite the differences and initial animosity towards one other especially when taking into account the bad blood between their parents, Violet and Xaden had undeniable chemistry! Lots of delicious tension that bordered the lines of sexual tension and hesitation on acting on their desires for one another. With the enemies to lovers trope it also added another layer to the romance that was equally entertaining to watch unfold. I also loved seeing how Xaden helped Violet, he never treated her like she was fragile, instead he encouraged her to utilize her own skills to help better herself. Xaden was serious and didn’t mess around, but this man legit had specially designed daggers made for Violet to fit her SPECIFIC BODY TYPE! They may not seem like a big deal to some, but to me that illustrated the attention to details that Xaden paid attention to regarding Violet. Plus, Xaden even went as far as making a saddle for Violet when she rode Tairn to help with her difficulties, like COME ON! Those little things spoke a million words. Also, the mind telepathy speaking between the two was also pretty special! I saw the sparks forming through out the story and I was kicking and giggling internally with watching Violet and Xaden become more than what they initially started off as. Every aspect of what down between Violet and Xaden was perfection and once things got steamy between them! HOLY MOLY IT WAS DEFINITELY A MOMENT! CHEF’S KISSES A MILLION TIMES OVER!

OMG OMG OMG! I’m literally shocked! My jaw dropped a billion times, and I simply cannot get over the epic adventure this book was. This book was exactly worth the hype and more! When I tell you, I was in the thick of it from refusing to stop reading, the amount of times I had actual goosebumps all over my body, yelling at the stuff that went down from plot twists, betrayals, secrets, the action, and more! I even caught myself surprised that I ended up sobbing my eyes out! This book deserves the highest honor possible, I will not tolerate any slander against this book, I shall protect Violet, Xaden, Tairn, Adarna, at all costs! MY GIRL VIOLET HAS CAME A LONG WAY SINCE THE BEGINNING! With her signet finally coming through! OMG! ONCE AGAIN LOTS OF GOOSEBUMPS AND SURPRISE AT THE EPIC SHOW OF POWER SHE POSSESSED! The amount of action and adventure this story had, had me enthralled and entertained at every turn! You want a fantasy book with dragons and the strongest of characters ever?! READ! THIS! BOOK! I could rant longer by the sheer magnitude this book has stolen my heart, but I hope you get the gist by reading this and realize, this is the book you have to read! I already want the next book! ESPECIALLY WITH THAT ENDING!!!! AHHHH! JAW DROPPING AGAIN! If there was ever a book I would give an infinity rate, it’d be this book!

I understand what people meant by this is basically a published wattpad book but it’s text book modern fantasy, entertaining and has good plot twists so it’s hard to call it a “bad book”. If you are a book snob and hate fun I definitely wouldn’t recommend this book.

Didn't love the co-opting of Scottish Gaelic for a lot of the terms without checking to see if the grammar was correct.
