2.5 stars. It wasn't bad and I was interested enough to want to know how it ended however knowing it was part of a trilogy I kept finding myself wondering how they were going to drag it out over 3 books. Then I found myself skimming bits so I guess the answer by making the story drag in part. I think it would have been much more enjoyable if it was less dragged out and also with the stupid manufactured love triangle removed. I didn't hate any of the characters but nor did I particularly love them either. I am interested enough in the overall story to seek out the next instalment though I will likely be skimming that one as well.

Intriguing twists to the whole paranormal ya novel with the gods and the guardians and the history of the Dark Ones and all that -- kind of refreshing. It was missing something to get it to the 5 stars...having hard time defining what that is though. I think the writing was a bit more simplistic, and spent time on mundane topics that had me waiting for something to happen, but no she was just taking a shower and no one was going to attack or whatever. That's not necessarily bad, I'm just wishy washy on it. It was kind of nice that while Ree felt she was a social outcast, she did have some self-esteem....I get the heroines that don't have self-esteem and think they're ugly or whatever, it's just refreshing to have a heroine that was satisfied with herself. Definitely interested to see where this goes...

I've been putting this one off for a while now although I don't know why as I love Nichole Chase's work.

I'm not a huge fan of this cover as although the girl in the cover reminds me of Ree the girl used looks fake she looks as though Photoshop was used a lot here. I do like the rest of the cover with the use of colours makes it stand out plus I like that it looks like the location used in the actual book.

Mortal Obligation is unique in that I haven't read a paranormal book like it which was a nice change but there was other parts of the story that was what every YA book involves. When I first started Mortal Obligation I was hooked and I couldn't wait to see what on earth was going to happen next, however, I felt it dragged a bit in the middle. I felt the romance side of the story was lacking and I didn't quite believe in the feelings plus I am a little sick of love triangles at the minute which this story has. Most of the story was getting to know about the powers that they all have and learning how to use them which I think was the reason why it dragged as it felt repetitive. The last quarter of the book was back to being hooked with some surprises that I never expected and then left open for the rest of the series which I am very much looking forward to reading.

I pretty much liked all of the characters, especially some of the secondary characters. Ree was an okay character as she was a strong person but with her being put on the sidelines it made her (understandably) whiney. Paden was a nice enough character as he was sweet and protective of Ree but he also kept changing his mind about whether he should be with Ree or not. Roland I liked as he came across better than Paden. Out of all the secondary characters Weylin was my favourite as he added much needed humour to the story.

Overall, not my favourite Nichole Chase book but that in no means that it wasn't an enjoyable read as for the most part I enjoyed it, it was just the dragging in the middle that brought it down.

Ree, an artistic slightly social outcast, is trying to live her life after the death of her brother. Her father throws himself to work while her mother kindly checked out mentally for a bit. For Ree normal isn't quite as reachable as she'd like. In love with her brothers best friend and seeing things that don't exist she has more trouble keeping things clear.

One night at a concert and things change drastically, not only for Ree but also for her circle of friends. Things get interesting when Paden and Ree are attacked by the things she had assumed to be in her head. Quite the shocker until Paden realized he now has fangs.

Taken by Sophie to a location Ree and the gang are finally told a story and get bits of information. Ree holds power she wasn't aware she held and it is up to her to save the world from the evil trying to take over. Her power will release the power within her friends and trigger a change in them that will help them protect her better. They are her Guardians. There is ONE, and only ONE that she must defeat in order to win. (of course he comes with an army but he is the one that must die) Regardless of the number, the possibility of her winning is slim without some training.

Roland, the bad boy trying to be good....one of the evil ones yet still able to be good. He struggles to be near Ree as he sees her as the one he lost, yet she isn't. It is up to him to take these teens and train them to properly guard.

The battle scene was epic, by far my fav part of the book. The ending had a huge twist that had my jaw dropping and my head spinning. Can't wait to read the next installment.

I did like the book. I felt a connection with the characters and the story panned out well. There wasn't much backstory and I had to make links as I went along. I had to keep reminding myself how young the main character was so I wouldn't get too frustrated with her inner dialogue. Paden is really likeable and Roland - set up for a triangle. There are a lot of unexplored tangents which will probably play out in book two & three. The story also finishes on a bit of a cliffhanger which is no surprise. I will look out for the rest of the trilogy.

Mortal Obligation is quite a unique novel. I thought that it had a really great execution and there was just action from the word go. It was really good to be sucked into the story and then to keep getting pulled into the story so that I could get it read in no time.

I liked Ree as a character and I thought her full name Alastriana, was really cool. It was different, unique and I really liked it. I also liked Paden and Juliette. Actually, come to think of it there wasn't really any of Ree's friends that I didn't not like.

There was one little thing that irked me a bit and that was the way Ree and Payden acted around each other. They just made me want to grab them and push them together, at times it was so frustrating!

I thought that Ree's power was really interesting and I loved the whole concept of this book. I'm always interested in Gods and Goddesses and so this one was great. I'm curious to learn more about the powers and what these Gods and Goddesses do as well.

Mortal Obligation is quite a short book so it's quite easy to breeze through it. I did think that the ending was kind of abrupt though, but in saying that it is the first book in the series. I thought it did a good job setting up the series though. Especially with the little twist at the end that I have to admit I was not expecting at all. It was definitely a good twist though.

Overall, I enjoyed Mortal Obligation. I look forward to continuing with the series.
