when i say 'legit made me cry' it's more like 'legit caught me off guard and brought tears to my eyes'

but still

This worked well enough for a stand alone manga, but I would have liked a bit more context/explanation at points. But this really is two lost souls finding each other in an old laundromat in the middle of the night and being drawn to each other without having any context or explanation of who the other is, so maybe it is churlish to want that for myself. It does have some things that makes BL manga BL manga, but I also think if the volume were longer or it was a duology the author could have explored some things that would have explained their dynamic more or leant into under-negotiation. However, I did enjoy this and am not mad I bought a copy.

Overall this was a decent story that kinda just ended up falling flat for me. It started off super depressing and pretty much stayed that way the whole time. Not to mention that we learned a lot about Ethan, but practically nothing about Mike. While it was very true to life with a hopeful ending I just couldn’t help feeling really upset afterwards.

What I liked
  • The character art is gorj
  • It was nice to see some age and body diversity (even if only some body hair)
  • The general concept was interesting.

What I didn't like
  • I was uncomfortable with the lack of consent. Almost DNFed.
  • The plot was barely there. The threads were real loose, y'all (maybe that's the trade-off for a standalone?). It touched on some heavy themes — poverty, crime, suicide, codependence — but didn't have much to say about them (or at all; pretty surface level).
  • I'm no stranger to reading manga and following panels, but some of the panels in this I had absolutely no clue what I was looking at and couldn't even make sense of them using context clues. That might be on me though.
