A simple read, I found myself put off by the writing style. It was overly simplistic; a tad confusing at points because of the lack of description. Anita didn't convince me of her vampire slayer status and the other characters were whipped by so quickly that I didn't really get to know them, save Phillip and Edward. And those relationships were less than rewarding.

I will give the second book a try, but if it doesn't capture my mind, I'm going to cut my losses.

Note: I figured out what was bothering me about the whole thing. Nikolaos (how do you say that anyway?!) is a poor imitation of Anne Rice's Claudia. I missed the sheer terror that this little creature was supposed awaken in the characters.

The Characters are great and the stories not bad. Unfortunately the audio book has special effects sounds which I hate but the reader is good. The world it takes place in is not logically self consistent. The author also seems to be addicted to pointing out those problems, which makes it hard to suspend disbelief and enjoy the story. If the vampires are affected by blessed crosses and holy-water that would remove faith since it would make everyone certain about god there would be no atheists and there would be no faith. You can't have explicit and testable proof of something and faith in it,since faith is the belief in something with out proof.

This book/series has been on my radar forever, but the title and cover held me back for a very long time. I finally took the plunge and was delighted to find a solid urban fantasy plot with little romantic distraction.

The world building is richly laid out with an emphasis placed on vampire politics. This makes sense, given the heroine, Ms. Anita Blake is a slayer of vampires who cross the line. Her fighting skills combine nicely with her animator abilities to make her a unique and interesting character.

The plot itself was mostly murder mystery with a lot of paranormal action and adventure thrown in. Ms. Hamilton set the world up nicely, laying a solid foundation for the series with the introduction of many classes and character types. There was a solid conclusion to this book, but there is still plenty of mystery upon which the series can build. I look forward to experiencing more of this series.

I feel like it was fine. It wasn’t great, it wasn’t awful, it had enough of a plot to keep me vaguely interested. I’ve read better and definitely read worse. Multiple reviews tell me it’s not worth investing in the series so I’ll skip. I’ve got a bunch of other book series to dive into, anyway. Maybe one day I’ll come back.

Entertaining vampire book. A bit darker than some of the others I've read (these are a guilty pleasure for me), but if you're just looking for an easy and brainless entertaining book, this is a good option.

I have finally read the first of this series - written way back in '93. Anita Blake is a memorable character, and the storyline is compelling. I can't wait to get my hands on book #2.

Anita Blake is a professional animator--she raises people from the dead. In vampire circles, she's known as the Executioner--a vampire slayer. In this alternate St. Louis, vampires, were-folk, zombies, etc., are considered people--they have open and legal status. Anita also works with the police on supernatural crimes.

Someone is killing vampires, so Anita is called in by the police, and the vampires--though they are not so nice in their asking. The master of the city is Nikolaos, a 1000+-year-old vamp who looks like a little girl. And she's stuck in cranky mode. Evil and dangerous, but Anita must work for her to stay alive, even though the partnership goes sour pretty quickly. She also ends up bound to another vamp, Jean-Claude, which has its own ramifications and problems. Anita eventually finds the killer, destroys Nikolaos, stays alive. Good intro to the series, but leans very much toward horror.

Got this book as a gift from my MIL, who says that she went to the bookstore and asked for "Twilight, but for adults." I'm planning on reading it in airports and getting totally sucked into the series.
