I rarely DNF books… I gave it a good go

I just didn’t like it - the writing was like a Wattpad book and the cutting scenes every 2 pages pissed me off it was so repetitive with her drowning blah blah blah

It was like a kid wrote it! Also her dialog was hilarious

I'm on the fence with this book not because of the subject matter but, because I did not connect with the characters, I didn't experience a lot of the emotions this book, this story promises.
Brooke was an intriguing character but, immature, naive, and whiny. I was told her life was hard but, I wasn't shown. What happened to her mother? Why was her father so unconcerned with the very clear issues his daughter showed.
Ceaser was okay... I don't know that I found him to be special or swoon-worthy. Sure, he was sweet, caring, loving to Brooke but, what else? If there was something else I didn't catch it.
The story in itself was, unfortunately, predictable... Maybe that's why I had a hard time with it.

The author's writing is good, there were very little grammatical mistakes, the cover is a beautiful visual of Brooke's internal battle. I feel there was something much deeper going on with Brooke though, like I said I never really read (and if I did I've already forgotten) about what happened to her mother, did they have a relationship? How did she die? Her dad was a big turn off, you don't stand by and watch your child suffer regardless of your beliefs.

Susurros Torturados
★★

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book is so emotionally raw and real. A taboo and forbidden romance between an uncle and his niece. The two main characters have been apart all their lives and when they encounter each other nothing else seems to matter. The FMC has depression and severs anxiety to the point of self harm but the first time in her life she feels free when she is in her uncle’s presence. The MMC knows it’s wrong but after a tragedy they are thrust farther into each others lives till they can no longer fight it. This book was so well written. Despite being and incestuous relationship it’s not sleazy. Really enjoyed this book.

this was a quick read.
I liked to portrayal of her mental illness and her struggles. It was very realistic.
I dont know if the taboo romance was necessary in this plotline tho.

I looooove taboo. I can let a lot of things slide in fiction that I would never support in real life situations.

That being said, I didn’t love this. I didn’t hate it, but it was a struggle to get through. The main reason I did is because of the representation of self harm. I wanted to see how it would read and what it would look like in a book. As someone who struggles with it, I wanted to see how it would be handled.

I was surprised with how much was actual on page tbh. While I know it can be used in movies here and there, I’ve never experienced it much in books, so it was an interesting dynamic to watch. Though as someone with a history, I feel she “recovered” unusually fast and easy. Granted what she went through was definitely a wake up call, I feel there wasn’t much actual recovery. It was just “oh this horrific trauma happened and now I choose life” and boom. Healed. Not super related for me.

Also while yes the relationship with her blood uncle is super taboo it wasn’t horrendously hard to get through when you account for how minimal a familial relationship they had up until this point. Regardless, it was super instalovey. I feel like the only* reason they didn’t immediately jump into bed and whisper sweet nothings to each other was the threat of societal judgement. Like there was almost no burn, no real angst. And then when they did take the leap it was like no hold barred as long as they kept it quiet.

I don’t know if it was the instalove or what but I just couldn’t get behind the chemistry they were supposed to have.

I’m not gonna get into the major event that happened but I struggled to believe what happened. Like I understand, but then again, not really.

I started this review with a three star but as I write I feel it’s leaning more a two. I just didn’t love it. I pushed through but idk if I’d say it was worth the effort.

Also, if you made it this far, I’m sorry!

Spoiler taboo uncle niece relationship - he met her once when she was 4

She got bullied really hard for having have speech apraxia (that seemed to be more obvious when she was nervous) and her “R”s come out as “w”s and the book opens with Ashley telling her that she should kill herself and dumping chocolate milk on her saying “that’s where the trash goes” after her dad died she moved into her uncles house but had to change schools since it was out of district and she runs into Ashley again and Ashley tries to talk Brooklyn into being friends and kept going on about how she made a mistake and that it was a really messed up thing for her to do in that. She really wants to apologize and make amends, but kept doing things that kind of put her in a shitty situation and to finish and top it off went to Brooklyn’s house under the confidence of saying that she was going to make her toast since she wasn’t feeling well and she ended up live streaming her journal which showed and talked about in explicit detail her sexual relationship with her uncle and Ashley ended up giving her knives and on the live stream a loser challenge she gave her knives and kept pressuring her to kill yourself and told her that she should just kill herself and went on and on about it, and Brooklyn ended up not dying, but she did end up losing her baby that she was not aware of due to blood and add allowed to Brooklyn to press charges against Ashley since in the state of California it is a felony charge to push someone into committing suicide, and she involuntarily killed somebody as well. The judge in the case also lost his son to this same live streaming challenge, where his son had a successful suicide, and he was the one to find him so he decided that Ashley was going to get the furthest extent of punishment that she can under the law, and so she gave her a life sentence with no ability of parole.
