maybe the best memoir i've ever read.

i knew going in crying would be good, and i knew going in crying would move me, but it somehow still managed to take me by surprise. beautiful and rich and so, so warm. so full of love it feels like a comfort in spite of itself.

This Memoir is a great reflection on the relationships that are nurtured through food. When Michelle and her mom’s relationship thrives on their shared love of food. It’s a work of art- the pain, the grief, the hope her and her father hold onto.
Even after her mother passes the relationship her father and her have over traveling and food.

This book handles love and relationships through the lense of Asian Americans. The struggle to relate to your parents culture and heritage, when the only connection you have is food- not being able to speak your parents native tongue. The struggle your Asian side of the family has to find the ‘Asian’ parts of you. This book perfectly explains how it feels to be too white for Asians and too Asian for whites. All while handling grief.

The interesting part about this book is that it’s hard to tell if it’s a memoir about the author or of her mother. It’s for anyone who has a mother, has experienced grief and is trying to live with it, or exists and has tried to find themselves in a mixed-race in-between. Michelle’s writing style is direct and funny and raw and poignant. Her metaphors are perfect, and despite my not being Korean American, I can confirm her experiences transcend to other types of displaced Asian American as well.

Nothing negative to say, just didn’t quite make it to a 5 star level book for me. Deeply personal and moving account of grief and growing up, it feels wrong to give any rating to this book

I picked this up with the hope that it would allow me to understand more about my relationship with my Halmoni. While two generations removed rather than single generation divide between Zauner and her mother, I hoped there would be some similarities in the joys and challenges of our relationships. The biggest bridge for my Halmoni and I is also food - I grew up eating fried green tomatoes and buttermilk biscuits alongside kimchi, bulgogi, japchae and more.

The memoir certainly brought some of the closure and understanding for which I was hoping. I also really like the prose, which is evocative and accessible. Beyond that, I think I read this at a time where I couldn't connect to enough of the book. One of the biggest themes is Zauner's grief, and I think reading this without any grief of my own to tap into, large portions of the book did not resonate, even though they were provocative reads.

Very few books have made me cry as much as this one. Any book that can inspire me to listen to an album, look up a recipe, AND make a doctor’s appointment is frankly a miracle.
