3.5 stars, rounded to four. I’ve really liked the Seannan McGuire (sp?) work that I’ve read so far, especially the Spores series of short stories from the Apocalypse Tryptich. However, I’ve tended to experience (at the the audiobook versions) of Mira Grant novels as full of snark and teenage angst (Feed, which I didn’t finish). Somehow, this didn’t seem to fit the tone of the alien saga - a tone which the Audible originals capture. But for the nature of the aliens and the title of the book, little else about this novel would have been suggestive of Ridley Scott and James Cameron’s worlds. In reading some other reviews, perhaps I failed to release this was YA sci-if.

I've loved the movies since I was a young girl, and this is the first book in this universe that caught my interest and held it. Really enjoyable read!

The beginning of this story felt a lot slower than I'm use to for a Grant book, so there was a teensy struggle to stay interested (really did not care about Kora or Olivia's gigantic crush on her).

But then things started to get more interesting and the situation just kept escalating.

SpoilerIt felt weird that I wasn't really emotionally invested in a Grant book - actually found Kora and sometimes Olivia annoying.

I didn't expect Violet to be an android - I was thinking that Olivia might have been schizophrenic OR Violet was a ghost, but that didn't quite fit in with some of the scenes. When it was revealed that Violet was an android it was such a face palm moment... like DUH. Geez. Made so much more sense than my ghost theory.

Be interesting to see where this series goes though.

Holy cow, I loved this. I'm a bit of a loon for the Alien movies, so this book was a must for me from the beginning. But when we first heard of someone going to clean up a junked ship, I all but rubbed my hands together with glee. It takes off just like the first movie, with suspense and thrill! It's incredible, and I highly recommend it to anyone, especially those who enjoy the Alien universe!

For someone that doesn't really like reading books set in first person, I seem to have picked up a lot of them (it's also probably not a coincidence that they're all YA books).

This is definitely a book that gets better as it goes along, and as ever Mira Grant's action sequences are fast flowing and keep your attention... it's just that it takes a little while for that action to get going, which I'm not 100% certain was needed since this is clearly a book in the Alien franchise and we all should know what's coming at some point in the book.

The main character is generally likeable, but her tendency to consistently ignore her own better judgement set off a fairly large dose of second hand embarrassment for me - I'm aware that this likely reads totally differently for someone who is actually in the YA target age range.

There's at least one plot twist that I didn't spot coming, though it's always fun to look back and realise that it actually was possible to spot it coming, it was just well written.

Overall, I'd have liked a little more suspense and more aliens, and at several points the main character's name swaps between Olivia & Olive and I'm not sure if this was a deliberate misuse of her name or just something that was missed in the editing process.

I enjoyed it, I'd be interested in seeing what happened to the characters next, but I'm not sure I'd re-read this particular book.
