“Scientists are like children: They always want to know everything, they all ask too many questions, and they never follow orders to the letter.”

I know that this isn't exactly my typical read, but I really enjoyed the first book of this alien sci-fi trilogy and I've been meaning to continue the series ever since. I confess I did mainly pick up Waking Gods because I was hoping it would take me to South Dakota again like the first book, but no luck there... But this second book will take you to plenty other places instead, and the situation without doubt escalated to a whole new level. Before I continue, a little warning: this is definitely a series to read in order, because you won't understand what is going on otherwise. The characters won't be introduced again either... You've been warned. Anyhow, this sequel went in a different, but no less thrilling direction. In fact, the stakes are even higher in Waking Gods, although it does still have that same feel as the first book. This has everything to do with the unique writing style and format: the story is told through is told through interviews, diaries and other files as well as multiple POVs, which I know might not be for everyone. I personally really enjoyed this mixed media format, and I liked what it added to the plot. There is something truly addictive about this story, and I simply couldn't stop reading... The fact that the love triangle from the first book is not present is only a bonus. Then again, there isn't much time for romance in the first place with the dire situation everyone on Earth finds themselves in... I don't often read and/or enjoy alien stories, but this trilogy is definitely turning out to be a winner so far. I can't wait to pick up the final book soon!

i didn’t like the first book so i wasn’t surprised that the second was even worse for me. none of the action/intensity really felt like it hit as i was experiencing it after the fact or in clunky dialogue form as it was happening. the characters were still unlikeable and the plot seemed to get more boring tbh. parts of the genetics and overall science of the book, when talked about, also just came out like pretentious info dumps i didn’t care about. and don’t get me started on the big reveal on the mysterious narrator we had - it was stupid and didn’t even matter in the end. what a waste.

the only reason i read it (and will read the third) is that weird completionism thing i have.

who knows?? maybe the end will really win me over

More of a mixed bag than the first book, with some big moments and many robots. I found this book to be fairly depressing actually, so maybe I’ll wait to read the next one. I definitely enjoyed some characters more than others since the story is so much broader in scope. Audiobook is still the way to go but there’s a lot of screaming which should have been toned down imo.

When giant robots start appearing all over the world, it seems like humanity might come to an end. Can Rose and her team put a stop to the destruction?

This was a good sequel to Sleeping Giants. It was interesting and well written, just like the first book. I enjoyed the newly introduced characters and stories.

I will say that I’m a bit tired of the file premise and could tell the author was starting to feel constrained by it as well. I also didn’t like the voice actor for Eva in the audiobook, but that’s not the author’s fault.

The stakes escalated quickly indeed! Still full of twists, just on a greater magnitude.

Some of the plot turns we’re not what I wished to happen, but boy were they well executed.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect for a sequel but this was actually really good! I am crushed by some of the developments but I guess I get why they had to happen 😭 anyways just a fun sci fi series that I would def recommend for anyone looking for something to read!

Waking Gods picks up ten years after the events of the first book, Sleeping Giants. I was intrigued but at times bored by the slow pacing of the first book in this series so I worried that while interesting, I wouldn't be gripped by Waking Gods. Thankfully, this was not the case. Told once more through interview transcripts, diary entries and mission logs, this book is even more captivating than the last. As the aliens that created Themis arrive on Earth, action and mystery unfolds, drawing Rose, Kara, Vincent, and our nameless Agent into dramatic new situations. The events of Waking Gods are so much bigger, discussing themes of morality, humanity, family, and the desperation to make a difference. My investment in the characters and their relationships only grew as the story unfolded and the tension racked up. I also loved that Neuvel left space for moments of tenderness and normality in the midst of all the action. It allowed the book to maintain a feeling of reality. I have no doubt that the finale to this series will be as adventurous and thoughtful as Waking Gods is, and hopefully, even more moving.
