When a frightening demonic creature begins terrorizing their small village, a former elite soldier and goofy vigilante hero band together to protect their homes.

HR/Fantasy, M/F, part of a series but stands alone fine, open door.

Notes: I enjoyed this - though reading out of order in the series might actually affect my enjoyment a little more than I thought it would.  The backstory is just super compressed - I wish the FMC was a little older.  I enjoyed the bouncy ball MMC, and the slight reversal in power/status, but I think it could have used more trimming in backstory and building in plot.

OTT and Spoilery Content Notes:
blood and gore, red headed MMC, fmc was very ill (turned into a statue) in the past for many years, alcohol, fmc was misusing alcohol, light general manhandling, infidelity while FMC was ill by her fiancé (with the support of her parents), golden sibling, military FMC, child soldiers, death, intentional amputation (side character, in an attempt to prevent illness, in the past), contraception, fmc begins oral sex while the mmc is asleep (after they have established a sexual relationship), restraint with hands of wrists during sex, severe injuries (goring/stabbing), magical/primitive medical care, pregnancy, fighting

This is one of the most exceptional fantasy romance series I've ever read, and this addition to it is not less spectacular. Sarya and Bannin are both troubled by their past; Bannin for being Second and Sarya feeling bereft and easily replaceable. Their story was quick but sweet. I am definitely looking forward to future installments set in this world.

I know Sarya is going through some shit, but I wish she had more of a chance to showcase her former badass self.

Wow! This was an amazing read, and covered so much despite the shorter length, I was really rooting for these two, and I fell in love with Sarya, her strength and perseverance, and her ability to just accept a scenario where no one is wrong, but she's still hurt. Pairing that with Bannin, who is unafraid to just say what he wants, and understands what's needed, and you get this wonderful couple you wish there was more of.
