"The key to life... is looking and acting like you know exactly what you're doing at all times."

This book was truly incredible despite the fact that at the very beginning I did not hold out a huge amount of hope as I was very confused about what was happening. However I continued on, fuelled on by the hilarious writing and wonderfully interesting characters. As the story continued I became hooked on the plot and desperate to know what would happen next. Some how balancing both humorous and tense moments with a number of shocking reveals, this story really blew me away.

My only negative was that I occasionally found myself irritated by the cutaway chapters as I just wanted more from the main cast, however the reasons for their importance became clear as the book continued. Overall, completely astounding and the cliff hanger at the very end has made me want to pick up the next book as soon as possible. I cannot wait to see how this world progresses.

Although the villain and the overall plot felt a bit flat at times, the main characters were built well and I look forward to seeing them develop through the series.

This feels like a worse version of slow horses with magic. Well, I haven't read slow horses, but I feel like it would be similar.

Really enjoyed this book - particularly the good cast of characters that all felt really fleshed out.

The plot itself was intriguing, and I liked how it was slowly revealed over time, although occasionally all the myriad side characters being introduced made it a tiny bit confusing.

Not sure how I felt about some of the non-white characters' speech being written phonetically at times, but at least they seemed to be written as decent layered characters. There were also a couple of times where the attempts at humour didn't really work for me - the cover reviews boasted about being Pratchett-esque, and some of the descriptions and asides of that nature felt a little too forced for me.

Looking forward to getting into the next books and seeing where this little ragtag bunch ends up next.

For much of this book, I was thinking I would only rate it 3 stars but it got much better during the last 25% of the story.
