Like four pages into this book I thought I knew what I had gotten myself into. A typical and then and then and then book. But it is so much more and just blew me away with this silly and yet simple and perfect metaphor for life.

A sweet little book that would be perfect for lower elementary writing prompt on beginning, middle, and end.

Life has ripple effects. We often don't know what they are until we are right in the middle of them. For all of the animals in this story, they didn't realize something would happen.....if the incident beforehand hadn't happened. It's a good reminder for life.
I thought this book was sweet!!

I can see why this received a Caldecott Honor: the story was well-done, the illustrations are great, and together they make the book even better. Be sure to read the author and illustrator notes; they could lead to a good discussion with children. I kept staring at the faces of the animals; how can Pham make them so expressive yet so simple? And, although there were some colorful pages throughout the book, at the conclusion, the colors seem joyful on the closing page. (and I still have a soft spot for illustrations that are done the "old-fashioned way.")
