Finished book two in my #24in48 #readathon. I've not been into the X-Men in over a decade so when they rebooted I decided to give Blue and Gold a try. Of the two I would only recommend Blue, Gold just didn't cut it. I'll also try the new Astonishing that started this week but I only read them when I have trade's worth of issues. X-Men Blue is just a continuation of All New X-Men, but minus the added interesting characters (you'll be missed Kid Apocalypse and Idie), and plus the dull twist of working for Magneto.
The gang ends up re-encountering characters from The Ultimate Universe and then not doing much interesting with them. I'm also not too keen on the art. It's not bad, it's just a departure from most of the previous stules
If you haven't been religiously following the adventures of the time displaced X-babies, then this book is probably not for you.

A pleasant enough read. I wish they could figure out what Jean looks like and draw her consistently. But otherwise the story hangs together pretty well. And the new old x-men continue to be better than the old old x-men ever were. And I like the Beast learning magic and Jean being lead. As for working with Magneto, that never ends well.

I was a little disappointed. The writing had some nice character moments here and there, but the plot didn't feel very tight or substantial, and the artwork wasn't for me except the issue one prologue by Matteo Buffagni (which was so stylish and moody). I loved the costume designs though. Just seems a little beige in general. More like a supplemental read rather than a proper ongoing title. Maybe more of a 2.5 rounded up?
Miss Sinister seems like an awfully lazy character choice. I've not seen her before so I could be missing something but she just seems like Sinister in White Queen clothing. I'm totally down with more women characters, and totally fine with race and gender swapping, but there doesn't seem to be anything unique about her, or any point to making a gender-swapped version.
Purely from an aesthetic point of view, I liked Jimmy Hudson with his beard and blonde Wolverine hair, but then the artist changed and the beard disappeared and it lost me. Without any character development, he just looked like someone colored Wolverine in wrong.
Jean and Hank are the standouts, and they seem to be the only two with anything interesting going on in terms of character development, so I'll be interested to see where they go, and if the rest of the team become anything more than set dressing.

I'm gonna give this a 4.5 since I enjoyed it an awful lot! Cullen Bunn's run on Uncanny X-Men: Superior was probably the best amongst the post-Secret Wars amongst all the X-books...and still, it wasn't all that great.
This volume of X-Men: Blue, for the first time in the last two-three years, has a tone of hopefulness that was sorely lacking in the Marvel NOW X-Books reboots. The Original Five X-men are still in the present, once again reunited after space adventures, Jean's shenanigans in Extraordinary X-Men, and more!

It's off to a good start. I still feel like the "original" X-men have overstayed their time in this dimension and should return to where they belong. But there are a few members that I don't mind. I love seeing a younger Jean grow and become her own person and is able to have a personality in this era instead of boring Jean that we had in the past.
I don't care for Iceman and Beast. Angel and Scott have their good and bad moments but I still like them. Scott is still a little to whiny for me, compared to his past older counterpart who was a take charge kind of man. I love older Cyclops.
In this series we get the start of some plots going that will see in future volumes. It's interesting to see them working with Magneto, because they don't trust him at all. We see them talk about him eventually betraying them several times in this volume. We see them secretly training in the danger room with the scenario of trying to defeat Magneto because they know he will eventually turn on them.
I don't know how I feel about his dynamic of the original X-men teaming up with Magneto yet, but I know there's going to be a big showdown eventually and I just hope it's done good.
We see an alternate version of people come into this dimension and I don't care for it. I'm tired of the X-men having to deal with time travel and alternate people coming into their world. There is one person that comes into the group at the end, an alternate timeline where Wolverine had a son. He sounds interesting but I don't know yet how his story is going to go and there's too little to go on. But I'm sick of alternate dimension people and don't have high hopes for a good story, but we shall see.
Overall the book was decent, but if your sick of the "original" X-men and/or stories with people coming into this world from alternate dimensions, then this series isn't for you.
