pretty much my entire life i've always had a really hard time finding characters i relate to and it turns out its because i wasn't reading books about autistic transmasc people. who would've thought? not me, an autistic transmasc person, i guess.

this book put my soul into a vise and rubbed my face in the dirt while tauntingly asking how i liked it. i loved it actually. a majority of the content was ROUGH but the writing was lovely and as i said, i've never related to a character as much as silas.

check content/trigger warnings before you read for sure. if they don't deter you i couldn't recommend this book more. one of the best i've read this year.

Didn't expect to love it this much. Amazing and gut-churning.

Fantastic writing, compounded with gruesome imagery at every turn. Silas’s special interest makes for some very poetic—and disgusting—metaphor. Braxton’s presents a compelling mystery, a terrifying villain, and an intricate, horrific, and mystifying take on the era.

This book took a lot out of me. It is heavy and gruesome and beautiful. I will admit the surgical body horror made me a little squeamish, but as a trans autistic person, I loved the way the main characters were written. I don't usually like historical fiction, but I really loved this fantasy take. Highly recommend to anyone who is invested in dark fantasy, the trans experience, the autistic experience, and Victorian times (especially from a gendered/medical view) Just make sure you check trigger warnings for this one!
