Such a wild ride! throws the reader into the deep end of an unfamilar reality while slowly revealing the rules of its universe, and still keeps a page turning plot! dark, brutal, beautiful, funny, wildly imaginative. Unlike any book I have read! loved it!!

This book took me a while to get into, because it can be quite grim. There's an environment of terrible things, and terrible people doing insane and horrific things. In most cases, we're thankfully spared the details, but what details are given can be pretty gory.

And yet, I found myself hoping the protagonist would find herself out of the complicated web woven around her, to victory and freedom... even when that road stretched longer than she thought. Even in the darkest places, there are sparks of hope, defiance, love, strength, and joy. The end result is a book I need to mull over a bit.

This book was wild and so fast I had no idea at times what was going on, but at the same time I didn’t want it to stop. I recommend this to anyone who needs a book to get themselves back into reading, especially how well it blends different genres and all of the actions and mythology.

Such an inventive and interesting storyline! The world building in this book was pretty fantastic. Parts of it are gruesome and graphic. One of my favorite reads of the year.

I am not typically a sci-fi reader, but I came across this book as a recommendation from a best friend. I am so glad I decided to give this novel a try…talk about wow. A little slow at the beginning in order to set the scene and story, but by chapter 4 things get WILD. Just when I think i know, the author proves that i don’t. I thoroughly enjoyed the descriptive chapter titles that did not spoil the content (my favorite “The luckiest chicken in the world”). The only thing I was able to remotely guess is the reasoning behind the book title….otherwise I had an amazing ride reading a story that kept me on the edge of my seat needing to know what happened next. A refreshing writing style and take on a fantasy with sci-fi flavors. Looking forward to more from Scott Hawkins!

ohhh man. SUCH a fun book, really innovative premise and loved Carolyn. this book has fun adventure + romance + philosophy + talking animals + normal Americans + science so advanced it's indistinguishable from magic. I stayed up entirely too late finishing it last night, and really enjoyed every minute. it took some unexpected twists and turns and was overall super entertaining, but I was thinking and engaged the whole time trying to figure out what was going on and going to happen next. a bit confusing at the beginning but roll with it and it clears up pretty quickly.
