This book is about teenagers - of course. However, the problem and the storyline themselves are not like the ones that we usually see in everyday lives. Fun to read, hard to forget. Alaska Young is a goddess, though.

No one told me how depressing this book becomes about 2/3s through the novel! I really liked the story, though, because the characters felt relatable to me. The school is unique, but Pudge, the Colonel, Alaska, and everyone dealt with issues that many of us live with on some level. Alaska proves to be an enigma from the moment anyone meets her until her demise, but her mysterious factor matches the tone of the novel with Pudge searching for his "great perhaps". The philosophical questions posed by the religion teacher push these teens to think about the bigger picture and tie together the makes the mood of the overall narrative to the deeper meaning of life. Great read, especially for teens up to someone in their 30's still trying to find a place in this world and on a search for the "great perhaps".
Sept 2020: Edit for what I should’ve included in my original review. When Alaska died, I had to fight the urge to throw the book at the wall across the room, because I was so upset at how incredibly sad everything just became.
