This was so much less dark and horrible than I'd expected. (Not saying it wasn't dark and horrible, just...) I was extremely nervous when John dropped off Brooke at the end of the last book, like, seriously worried. This book somehow managed to be everything I wanted it to be without my having a clue about what that was. Props to you Mr. Dan Wells; I loved it.

The John Cleaver series will always be a favorite and Dan Wells will always be a favorite author. He created one of my most loved characters: John Cleaver, the morally right sociopath.
Seeing johns character struggling a bit to survive was heart breaking. He seemed as if he was tired. Which is to be expected given his circumstances at the start of this book. Also, just his life in general.
It's well written and jumps right in to the story while giving you an update on whats happened. It in no way seemed repetitive to read the recap. The story was fast paced and exciting. It never felt like there was a dull moment. This book flew by so quickly. Made me wish it was just a tad bit longer. This story was just as good as the others. But maybe my second favorite in this series.
The ending was perfect. It wrapped up in just the right way. Personally, I think all of Dan Wells books end on just the right note. This was really a wonderful series and I'm sad it ended but happy it ended the way it did.

Not a super satisfying conclusion to the series, but it was ok. Still think that the first book is the best of them all.

I loved the conclusion to this series (though I do wish there were more). I loved seeing John grow and become more than what people thought he was supposed to be.

When you read a book in thirty-six hours, you know it's pretty damn good. When you consider this series was only ever supposed to be trilogy, getting to the final installment in a hexalogy is quite the achievement. Not only was this last book nerve-wracking and full of action, but it managed to tie in the motif of cycles very effectively. How do cycles begin? How do we end them once they do? The book was very keen on hitting on the theme of cycles as much as possible. Violence, addiction, lying--it's all covered in a manner that's disguised subtly. But once you're done tearing through the slobber knocker of a plot, you gain some valuable and heady discussion into a pretty complicated subject regarding mental and emotional health. That's what I like about this series; it's not all demon hunting and blood. There are some critical thinking about a wide range of subjects put into it too.

Read this book in about a day, overall I really liked this series. It was rather original though it did have so of the same character development issues as the Dexter series, mainly surrounding sociopathic protagonist but I find I have no issue overlooking it for entertainment sake. Ending a series can be hard and I think Dan Wells does and ok job here I wish it was a bit more gradual but overall I was satisfied.

Big disappointment. The first half of the book was nothing new or interesting compared to the others, and had a lot of instances of cringey dialogue. The fire guy's whole pontification about life and death felt so forced, as well as literally all the monologues in here, particularly near the climax. I became extremely tired of those monologues about morality that weren't saying anything. Also, we are up to Book 6 now, and this is the place where you start to give some questions about morality to the Withered? Are you kidding me? Finally, the climax was also disappointing in its scope and outcome, and John's character arc felt forced, with no hints of subtlety in it or in any other themes the book tried to explore. This series started off so well, and then just fell flat on its face. :(
