Celeste Ng does a fantastic job of bring every character to life and diving into the complexities of different relationships and conflicts.   These characters bring to life topics like race, adoption, and class divides.

I enjoyed the themes of motherhood/class/race that plainly interacted in all the characters lives, whether they were aware or not. Felt like the fire didn’t tie into the story as much as I would have thought.

Well written! I just wish the chapters were shorter and there had been more character descriptions

What a great novel, that’s so multi-layered and rich with backstories for each of the main characters and which helps you understand why they ended up the way they did and what lead them to those decisions. It’s a story led by strong women characters who you might not always agree with their choices, but you understand why they made them.

a very beautifully written book that explores motherhood. i loved the commentary on adoption, specifically cross cultural adoption, and the ethics of alternative family planning. i liked the three person point of view that let the readers know what led to the characters, even minor ones, making the decisions that they do.
