So much fun reading this book, it was so crazy for a entry back into reading after not reading for a long time. Loved it !

I can understand why this book was such a hit in its day and why it continues to remain a cult classic. I am however, too old, too tired and too female to find it much fun. It seemed exhausting. It took all the fun out of taking drugs. I fail to see what grinding your teeth to stumps, being wildly paranoid about everything, vomiting a lot and never getting any sleep does for you. The whole book is basically an excuse for not actually doing your job that ironically turns into your job. Other than that it was great.

Absolutely wrapped - I’ve never had book create such a frenzy through its writing that you feel like you’re absolutely tweaking despite not having had a lick of caffeine (or anything else). Reminiscent of 90s Nickelodeon with a Jack Stauber animations/Baz Luhrman’s Romeo  and Juliet fusion in that it’s twisted but hilarious, with a sense of urgency permeating throughout. Suddenly desperate to get my hands on any of Hunter S. Thompson’s other novels.

I get that this is a classic and whatnot and understand its importance in terms of commentary on the 60s and transition into the 70s so I don’t feel like I can give this book a low rating.

However, I don’t think I am the right type of person to really love this book. It didn’t change or move me in any way. I’m glad I read it and had the experience but it’s not a book I’ll be going back to or insisting other people read. I feel like the kind of people who really love this book are the kind of people who really loved Wolf of Wallstreet.

Is it bad? No. Was I the target audience? Also probably no.
