This wasn't my favorite book, but I did enjoy the characters and the story towards the end. I am excited for the next one.

What I liked:
I loved the world. I find it really interesting and have so many questions. How many kinds of witches, how does cleaving work, etc, etc. I want to know more and I hope the rest of the series expands on it.
I loved the two leading ladies. Always a fan of both badass ladies, and women supporting other women. No fighting over guys, no stupid drama, just strong ladies helping each other.
And not only are they badass, they're also so smart. Always a great pairing.

What I did not like:
Once or twice there was scenes between the male and female lead that get kind of racy and I just...it doesn't get that much, it's not Maas's writing style, but it was enough to leave me kinda uncomfortable, and since I read YA to avoid these kind of scenes, full blown or almost there, it's a little jarring to suddenly have them.
In general, the romance just felt awkward and forced. I could have done without it.
This book was really slow to start. I struggled to stay with it, and while I'm glad I did, I almost DNFed this book. It just took too long to get interesting, after that first chapter was kind of exciting it got really slow again.

It took me some time to get into the story at first, but after that I was completely intrigued by the world created in this book and its fascinating characters. Cannot wait for the sequel :)!

Pros for me included the strong friendship between the two main female characters, overall fast-paced feeling of the plot, and the interesting world and magic that all have me quite interested in picking up the next book. I feel like there is a lot of ground work for a lot more of interesting that will start rolling as we move forward.

The biggest issue I had was basically just Merik. I didn't like him or the romance with Safi--don't worry it was all very instalove so no spoiler there. I didn't like that many of his thoughts and actions are things I would not consider okay because at the time he does not know that Safi is actually into him as well, but it's supposed to be "hot." I didn't feel the real connection between him and his best friend (probably because he was constantly thinking about controlling himself around Safi). I didn't like how he basically had no character growth. Both him and Safi are pretty hot headed, and he calls Safi out on it, and Safi honestly grows by the end of the book, but I feel like Merik is never called out on his own rashness and doesn't grow at all. Him and his interactions are basically what brought this down from a 4 to a 3 for me. Not a huge enough issue for me to want to quit the series as I thought the pros really shined, just took out some of the enjoyment for me.

This was such a great book. It has great worldbuilding, wonderful friendships, supercool and interesting characters and a captivating plot. It's the kind of book where you can be both confused ( in the way that it takes a couple chapters before you figure out how the world works) but still super excited and intrigued to the point where you can't put the book down. It's so well-written and I can't wait til Iget to return to this magical world.
