Definitly not my favorite Austen, but I still enjoyed it. If you're one of those people who thinks nothing happens in Austen book, this is the books to prove you right. The vast majority of the plot takes place in the second half, if not the last third, of the book. However, there were plenty of Austen's classic charaacters to go around, from the ridiculous to the scandalous.

I no longer have the patience for the over wordy unnecessary sentences. I am sorry but a whole chapter on the pros and cons of putting on a play? It wasn't just that there were many more social rules to acknowledge. I get that. But it still did not need to be that long. And small talk is something you put up with in reality, not in a book. I understand perfectly what was going on but I am glad this is not the norm for writing any more.
Maybe I am only going to enjoy Jane Austen stories in film and tv adaptations.

Might somehow survive this one book a week thing for my class!
Fanny Price is a unique and fascinating character... Mr Crawford is the exact comic book villain romantic interest that we expect from a Jane Austen novel... but damn if Edmund isn’t the absolute lamest, most limp male lead there has ever been

honestly i hate to say i feel a little disappointed after reading this.
like many, i wasn’t a fan of fanny at first: i found her meek and timid and far too feeble to be a decent heroine. however i was wrong on the judgement. she isn’t meek or feeble, she’s actually a very intelligent woman who’s just been worn down throughout her life but the more you read the more there is to her. i also liked how her importance became much more evident as the story progressed- no one thought much of her as a child, she was an outcast, but she becomes a greater part of the family as the story goes on.
i did really like the view that austen was taking on- a lot of her stories are a bit more light hearted and dramatic whereas this was deeper and slower, however i felt that the ending was rushed so it lost a lot of the impact and left me feeling rather deflated.
i know that in austen’s time it was fairly common to marry your cousins and i can sort of get over that because of the era (although the fact that fanny and edmund view each other more as siblings than cousins is a bit unnerving in this day and age) however what truly upsets me about the ending is that edmund spent so long declaring that he would never love anyone as much as he loves miss crawford and then two weeks later he claims to be enamoured by fanny when she’s loved him her entire life and he never looked at her twice- she deserves far more than that!
i suppose i can see why people like it however it’s not my favourite- the storyline was fine if a bit lacking, the characters had their merits although they weren’t the most inspiring and the ending was passable.
i’d say you could skip this if you wanted to.

I love Fanny, she’s so sweet and strong. You all hate her because you know you could never resist the charms of a lame like she did for so long.
