I desperately, desperately wanted to enjoy this. It was beautifully written, and for a book about plants, surprisingly engaging. But I just have too many other books that I can’t wait to read to force myself through something that doesn’t excite me.

Memoir, ecology, storytelling, history, sense of place, and more; it's hard to describe in conventional genre terms, which makes sense once you've started reading it. There are lessons to be shared and learned, along with questions about the future that are restorative rather than despairing.

I picked this up thinking it was going to be a bit fluffy. (The cover blurb is by the author of Eat, Pray, Love, after all.) Instead it was exacting reading, chapter at chapter. For me, the three strands are science, Indigenous folkways, and storytelling, and the author does a fine job weaving them together. It's important to read books like this that challenge the ways you think and the institutions you participate in. Hard to know what to do now, but I think Robin Wall Kimmerer would say to start where you are and at least do something.

A beautiful book! It showed how we are linked to the land and everything on it, and how we've gone down the wrong path, but was also somehow hopeful. Even the acknowledgments at the end were a seamless part of the book. The author reading the audiobook was perfection. (Read for Feminist Book Club)
