This book was surprisingly moving. Majority of the book was just chaos and the characters were incredibly strange and full. I was struggling a bit with the early parts of the book since I wasn’t incredibly familiar with some of the historical context of the Soviet Union under Stalin, but I later found a website that helped fill out that information and was incredibly useful in reading the rest of the novel.

It’s a funny, strange and dazzling book to read. A classic that I will definitely be reading again in future.

I really wanted to give this one five stars, but feel I can't, as it took me nearly two months to get through the first 100 pages. It really picks up speed after that, particularly into part two. Much of my problem lies in my lack-of familiarity with Russian lit and the Soviet-era. Reading the commentary in the back of most English editions fixes that. I really struggled with keeping the characters straight and thus felt no investment in them. Once we meet Margarita my attitude changed completely. I loved this book, and the ending really made up for the issues in the beginning. Absolutely loved the ending. Beautiful, unique, and compelling.

This book made me feel Not Very Smart. But I can see that if you have extensive background knowledge in both Christianity and Russian history, this book would be entertaining.

I can’t begin to understand all the reference to Russian history and the Soviet Union. Despite that I love this book. The story is great, all the characters are interesting. Knowing there is so much hidden meaning, even though I’m ignorant of it, makes me love it more. It gives me so much to research after finishing. It is fantasy in the most random, insane way and written & paced very well.

“What would your good be doing if there were no evil, and what would the earth look like if shadows disappeared from it? After all, shadows are cast by objects and people. There is the shadow of my sword. But there are also shadows of trees and living creatures. Would you like to denude the earth of all the trees and all the living beings in order to satisfy your fantasy of rejoicing in the naked light?”
