I’ve never read anything by this author and she’s suppose to be great but this book is definitely not her best work.

The cover sold me and then I hate not finishing books...
I thought it would get better but the book was seriously poorly written.

The different POV of characters that changed from first person to third person was strange and did not work; not to mention the mundane characteristics of the protagonists.

The pacing was all over the place, and did not do anything for the story and the plot twist (that was blatantly obvious) was terribly executed.

I feel like I have listened to books like this before and have to say I didnt really enjoy it.
It is like you are listening to it out of the book and you arent in the book. Very hard to explain, but it felt like I was a third party. Example of what I mean. The sentence would read, Cal would enter the room and ask Shadow how she is doing. Instead of saying I entered the room and asked Shadow "how are you" (hard to explain!) I mean the star of the chapter say (Cal) so we know it is him..... I like books where I fee like I am part of the book and not outside looking in.
Yes this was YA, but it felt really young, there was no spice and I didnt feel the build in the romance.
Sadly I wont listen to the next book in this series.

This is the absolute perfect amount of slow burn!! Very much a more friends-to-lovers which is really hard to find among fantasy!  Sweet, and fun!

All YA tropes, most used badly.
I think that summarizes how I felt about the book. Nothing in the book is new, or is intended to look new. The story is predicatble "AF", and I swear I hate using these abbreviations.
Here are my top 5 complaints:
1. The forced romance
2. The inconsistent pacing
3. The switch between 1st and 3rd POVs.
4. Shadow and Cal were both useless, and quite unreal and two dimensional. And really, were there no other YA names the author could think of?
5. The twist that was not a twist at all
I have had quite a bad run with YA fantasy this year, which could indicate that it's time I move on from this genre. But it's such a fun genre to go back to, that I find hard to let go. I liked neither the narration nor the world building of this book.
For me, [a:Melissa de la Cruz|21911|Melissa de la Cruz|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1521600969p2/21911.jpg] is to be avoided after this as her style and my reading needs don't coincide.
