I read this because I loved Frankopan's silk roads.
This is a nice little telling of the first crusade.
It's quite a short book yet at times very detailed, 4 stars only because I would've like to hear more about the eastern / Arabic politics on the other side of the equation.

The thesis of this book subtly but significantly recasts the genesis of the First Crusade. It is convincingly and thrillingly defended. If you're looking for something new on a topic that has been well-covered by great historians, you will appreciate this book. It reads a little like a mystery novel, as Frankopan methodically reveals the truth of Alexios I Komnenos, and the critical role he played in shaping the First Crusade, and thus the history of Medieval Europe. I believe this is one of the most important and novel additions to modern Crusader scholarship.

I think the title is a little misleading because then more than half of the book is an introduction..
Jam-packed with information, this is a tough read but a very high quality book. I liked Peter and his work. I am grateful that I got a lot of new knowledge out of it

Predugačko; od 300 strana knjige, njih 200 je uvod, a tema knjige počinje tek na 200. strani. Kvalitetno, u svakom slučaju.

Have always been curious to learn more about the events surrounding the crusade and Peter Frankopan’s book provides a very rich and detailed look at the events leading upto, during and the aftermath of the First Crusade which took place between 1096 and 1099 which saw the arrival of Western forces with the stated objective to ‘recover the Holy Land’. While the book is very detailed, it comes in at just over 200 pages and is written in a very compact and engaging manner which makes it accessible and an interesting read even for someone with only a very vague notion of the incidence.

Overall, would really recommend the book for any fan of history as a very accessible book while providing a very rich and vivid retelling of the events. Looking forward to reading the authors much more ambitious book ‘The Silk Road’ which provides a new history of the world.
