"Long Way Down" by Jason Reynolds is a literary marvel that transcends traditional storytelling boundaries. While verse novels may not be my usual reading fare, Reynolds' masterful narrative gripped me from the very first page.
At its heart, "Long Way Down" is a young adult novel that delves into the gripping tale of Will, a teenage boy driven by the need for vengeance following the tragic murder of his older brother. Set in a neighborhood governed by strict "street rules," Will finds himself compelled to seek justice for his sibling's death, navigating a complex web of loyalty and retribution.
What struck me most about this novel is its seamless blend of simplicity and profundity. Despite its brevity, Reynolds manages to convey a profound message about the inevitability and futility of revenge. Through Will's harrowing journey down the elevator, we are confronted with a series of haunting encounters with figures from his past, each a victim of gun violence and pivotal in his life. These encounters force Will to confront the complexities of his own narrative and the consequences of his actions.
Told through free-verse poems, "Long Way Down" is a raw, powerful, and emotionally resonant exploration of urban violence. The novel's structure, with each stop of the elevator bringing a new challenge and revelation, heightens the tension and keeps readers on the edge of their seats until its taut, ambiguous conclusion.
Reynolds' skillful use of symbolism, such as the 15 bullets in the gun and the parallel between elevator rules and street rules, adds layers of depth to the narrative, inviting readers to ponder the intricacies of the human condition. Moreover, the textured glimpses into the lives of supporting characters provide a vivid portrayal of the struggles and resilience inherent in their environment. In essence, "Long Way Down" is more than just a novel; it is a poignant reflection on love, loss, and the enduring human spirit. Reynolds' masterful storytelling and profound insights make this a literary gem that will stay with readers long after they turn the final page.

Really unique book, from concept all the way down to formatting. I really enjoyed this thoroughly, although I feel like it could've been even a little longer with more reflection on behalf of the main character.

This one was outstanding. It was a short read but so powerful.

A 15 year old boy is hell-bent on revenge when his brother is the victim of a gang shooting in the US. This novel in verse story is about his search for revenge.

When I closed the book, I let out a hushed 'wow'.

This book was fantastic. I didn't quite know what to expect at first; I'm typically not a fan of poetry books. But the way Reynolds crafted the story made if feel so real and so profound.
I loved the setting of the elevator and the floors felt like the manifestation of the trickling effect of The Rules. The Rules were passed down generation to generation - violence is always followed by violence - the never-ending cycle. And it's up to the protagonist at the end whether he will break that cycle.
I thought the poetry structure served the story well and the build up throughout really paid off in the end.

wow wow wow. such a stunning and heartbreaking story about the perpetual circles of gun violence that so many children are forced to endure in this country. the fact that it was written in verse made it even more impactful for me, this is definitely one that will stick with me a long time.

I just finished it and I already want to listen to it again. Mr. Reynolds' calming voice, elegant prose, and ability to bring out emotions through words struck me.
