3/8/10: Purchased (well, kind of. It was free in the Kindle store.) Very exciting because I have been wanting to read this series.

4/12/10: Finished! I really liked this book. A lot of people said they didn't like this particular novel in the series or the character of Rachel Morgan. I liked both. I was not annoyed by her as some were and I enjoyed the story. I did feel like it was a little disjointed at times but I was able to get past that and enjoy this book. I can't help but like these silly fantasy-type books. It's fun. It's not fluffy or romantic or sappy - just action and fun. Maybe that makes my tastes immature or unsophisticated; so be it.
I adored Jenks and his wife and Keasly and most of the other characters. I'm not sure about Ivy yet. I'm not sure what her deal is...I don't quite trust her yet.
I am looking forward to reading the rest in this series :)

First in a series. I liked it enough to try book 2. We'll see how it goes.

Why are so many paranormal novels sloppily written? This book needs an editor.
The story is ok, though sometimes hard to follow. The characters are typical of this genre--feisty gal with an unusual talent keeps getting tripped up until she succeeds at the big heist/capture/showdown. Seems like the author is trying for Stephanie Plum with hexes, but she doesn't have the dexterity with language or humor that Janet Evanovich shows off so well in the Plum books.

The first book in this series is a little tough to get into except for Jenks that is: he is one of the best parts of this entire series and if you can get through this first one I guarantee it will be worth it especially by books 4 and on! I find Rachel a bit frustrating in this first book and to be honest throughout the series but she becomes this friend or sister that you expect to do dumb things and I definitely became emotionally involved w/ all the characters and just cannot wait for the next book to come out. So if you have some patience please give this series a chance: I have definitely enjoyed reading it even though I gave the first book only two stars.

A toxin carried by tomatoes decimates the human population--and reveals the paranormal kinds living among them. Tjis causes society to split--humans and Inderlander. Rachel Morgan is a witch working for Inderland Security, catching those who misuse their magic. But she decides to go out on her own. Not a problem until Ivy, her coworker, decides to go with her. Ivy can't be touched, so Rachel gets a death warrant instead. To pay it off, Rachel decides to bag the most ellusive criminal around--Trent Kalamack. No one even knows if he is human or not. Getting dirt on him gets Rachel in all sorts of trouble. She gets stuck in the form of a mink and entered into a rat fight; she is attacked by a demon. But she does manage to get her contract paid off and enough dirt on Trent to make him leave her alone. For now.

Entertaining and fun. A good read.

Loved the secondary characters. There's so much not told in this story that almost makes me want to continue reading the series. My annoyance at the main "mary-sue" character and the glaring typos are the only thing holding me back.

A fun adventure, and I like the worldbuilding here.

It may have been the narrator, but Rachel comes across as shrill and kind of annoying. However, the story had lots to recommend it and I'm on to book 2.
