Simply Irresistible
3.5 Stars

Escaping her wedding to a much older man, Georgeanne Howard runs into hockey star John Kowalsky, who reluctantly and unknowingly, helps his boss's bride make her getaway. Seven years after sharing an unforgettable night together, Georgie and John meet again, but this time the sparks are flying for a completely different reason as Georgie has been keeping a life altering secret. Can these two overcome their anger and resentment to find happiness together?

Despite the fact that neither the hero nor the heroine are particularly likeable characters, their romance works for some reason. Perhaps it is because they deserve each other.

John is a self-absorbed narcissist with an ego the size of a Mack truck, and Georgie is a selfish and manipulative shrew. Their behavior toward one another is simply appalling with both acting in spiteful and vindictive ways. Nevertheless, the intensity of their chemistry somehow compensates for it all, which is a sign of Gibson's skillful plotting and immersive writing style.

The secondary romance between Mae and Hugh is much more engaging, and there are some wonderfully sweet and funny moments between John and his daughter. Thankfully, the sporting elements play only a minor role and the story does not get bogged down with the tedium of boring sport descriptions.

All in all, a light and sexy read, but beware the obnoxious characters.

22 years old but aged incredibly well. Sex scenes are on point, dialogue is on point, story is on point. 10/10 would read again.

John and Gerogeanne meet when Georgi runs out of her wedding leaving her fiances, Virgil, at the alter. John doesn't realize until too late that he had helped his boss's fiance get away. With no place else to go they end up at his house at the beach and end up spending a night together. During their brief encounter Georgi fell half in love with John and was devastated when he dropped her off at the airport saying that his career was more important. But what was worse was that Georgi had no place to go. Having been raised by her grandmother who died several years ago, Georgie was stranded with no money and no one to turn to whether she stayed in Washington or went back home to Texas. So instead of flying out she took to the classifieds and managed to get a job interview with a catering company which seven years later brought about her reunion with John.

So this was a big relationship centered book, not a whole lot of action going on other than that. I did end up really enjoying this book but there were somethings that didn't happen in this book that I would have hoped for. In the beginning Georgi talks about a friend that she left at her wedding, she mentions her friend several times in the first chapter but after that she is nowhere to be found. Once John and Georgi make it to his beach house you meet John's grandfather who is pretty darn awesome! I would have loved to see him more thought out the book but he doesn't make another appearance until the very end.

All that aside, I laughed, I cried and in the end I was happy with the story. So 4 stars.

It's quite refreshing to read rom-coms from the 90s. The decade difference is evident in the descriptions of the characters, the romance and the dialogue itself. If this book was written in our current decade, the writer would no doubt be crucified in the reviews for over-emphasis on pure manly heterosexuality shining through from the male character's presence to his walk and talk and on the other hand the female character's utter feminine helplessness. The book strongly drew on stereotypical gender rules. It also felt like the realization of John's love for Georgie was abrupt. It should have been more drawn out in this aspect and made logical. Another thing that shouldn't have been drawn out this much was the big fight.
So, moving on from the critique, the book was really enjoyable and it had some laugh-out-loud moments owing purely to dear Lexie. It was a light romantic-comedy with a happy ending and exactly what I needed to read.
