A good book if you're the target audience. I think I've already gotten most of hooks' ideas from other sources that were influenced by this book.
No "wow" factor that I've gotten whilst reading other books by hooks.

There were some great parts to this-- specifically in understanding how patriarchy harms men and how women can internalize patriarchy and impose it upon the men in their lives.

I feel bad giving this three stars, because I love the way bell hooks writes and breaks down these tough concepts. But I couldn't ignore criticisms of its essentialist view of gender, and that non-heterosexual relationships weren't really mentioned or examined.

Overall, I'm glad I read it, and I think a lot of these concepts about masculinity should be more prevalent in feminist thinking. I loved All About Love by bell hooks, so I had high hopes for this one, but was a little disappointed.

This book deserves more attention and is a fundamental piece of literature for everyone claiming to be a feminist.
It is eye-opening and hopeful for a future in which the patriarchy loosens it’s grip on all genders.
bell hooks produces nothing but impeccable literary work and should be in every person’s bookshelf.

This book was recommended by a professor who said that one of the biggest issues facing men in our society is that they have lost their ability to love themselves and in turn others, and suggested this book.

As someone who has a young son, I want him to feel like he can love how he wants, and be emotionally sensitive. When the time is right, he will get this book from me. If only I had received it earlier.
