Volume 1 was great, and this one was good, too, but I'm ready for volume 3 to start tying certain elements together.

Not as good as the first volume, but I still enjoyed it. However, the flaws with this series seem to be more prevalent:

- the art, while enjoyable, can become incomprehensible during action sequences. Also, almost all of the female characters have dark hair and it requires extra effort to differentiate them from each other.

- the pace is almost too breakneck. The first volume had more flashbacks that helped to give depth to the characters. This volume did not have an equivalent device and it suffered.

- the cursing really bothered me, especially coming from the kid characters. Often, comic writers use cursing as a crutch to convey emotion (anger, fright, frustration, feeling tough) but don’t actually do the work to show us the root of emotion. It just becomes nasty words with zero meaningful impact. Lazy.

I’ll read the next volume, though. I’m interested to see where this goes.

Solid 3.5, it lets itself down in areas, giving up some of its frenetic pace. Then again, it still delivers what it promises by the end of the issues collected. Pulpy madness there for the yucks!!

3.5 ⭐️ Not as good as volume 1, however, still a solid read.

While I enjoyed the painted art and the fact that this volume revealed the motivations and past experiences of several of the characters through internal dialog, I found the story arc collected in this volume to be overwhelming. I think that this was a combination of the painted art, very bright color palate (with a lot of jarring fuchsia), and the fact that the internal dialog was superimposed on top of action scenes. I'm all for counterpoint of words and images to get the most bang for your buck in comics and graphic novels, but everything together was a little bit too much for me, especially because I was already slightly confused because I couldn't quite recall what had happened in the issue or two preceding this collection. There was a ton of action, yet the story didn't seem to move forward at a satisfying clip. I'm looking forward to volume 3, though, since Grant is going to be back with the team.

I don't know why the quality changed so much from volume one to volume two but this is unfortunate. Very cliched deus ex machina takes over the story. I also started to find it difficult to tell the various characters apart. There's the dad, the mom, the dad's lover, the mom's lover??? I don't know what's happening. Their voices all sound the same to me.

A slight improvement on the first volume. Some of the dimensions have added to the previous plot twist, and some of the characters are showing more depth. I’m still undecided about the series though.
