this book was easy to read but absolutely predictable. it doesn’t deserve nearly as much hype as it gets. should be half as long as it actually is as there’s just So. Much. extraneous detail.

Loved this book. I saw it on several LatinX author lists and simply loved it. I normally read psychology, philosophy, self help books, and this was so refreshing. It's honestly a book I wish I had read to a younger me. I loved the parts that covered the love between Olga and her grandmother, it reminded me of my own and the inclusion of the poem 'Puerto Rican Obituary' by Pedro Pietri, to tie into the narrator's identity and title of the book, was sadly beautiful in a solemn way.

Yes, it talks about identity, politics, love, family, among many other things; that's the beauty of it, and what makes it really stand out. This book had many voices asking to be heard and I loved hearing each of them.

Good, just not my kind of book. As a non-latinx, non-american with a good family relationship, I felt myself trying to understand the politics more than the characters and story.

I picked this up at a free little library in the neighborhood because it sounded vaguely familiar (the buzz must've cut through somewhere / somehow). I had no expectations and really enjoyed the read! It's an interesting tale of family relationships and boundaries, especially considering values and careers. I especially enjoyed the core plot of the book, about the main character's sense of self and feeling torn across two cultures and value systems. As a bonus, I learned a lot about Puerto Rico historically and politically!
