I have been interested in Taken for some time, but needed motivation to really read it. Sadly the prequel doesn't really provide me motivation, if anything it demotivates me.
I didn't like Bree. I didn't like Lock. The only character I slightly sympathized with was Heath and his illness and later his wounds and what happens after that.
I am still very confused about the whole taking/snatching thing and how it works. So not everyone gets snatched? Some get to stay? And girls disappear with 16 and boys with 18? And where do those who get snatched go? Death? Some kind of magical land? And people just let it happen? When did it start? Why 16 and 18? Soooo confused and so many questions.
I might read Taken, but probably not.

Living in a coastal settlement with no way out. That sounds like a major suckfest. Obviously the whole breeding aspect would be an issue, if not confusing. I just think I’d get seriously bored with it. The entire Taken universe is fascinating though. I do have to admit that this review is for Stolen, the prequel to Taken and I have not read Taken yet. I like to read the prequel(s) first, if at all possible.
Bree was amazing. I want a friend like her and I’m really hoping she’s in Taken. She’s tough and can take care of herself. I did feel really bad for her when it came to Lock, the boy she loved. I can imagine how much it hurts for that to essentially be one-sided. I will admit to being confused by their relationship. I think it was definitely one of those where you hold the person you care most about at an arm’s distance (for Lock), but I’m not sure.
The story is an interesting one. After reading Stolen, I’ve come to realize that Taken is not about what I thought it was, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing (I think I was confusing it with the movie Gone). However, now I’m prepared for something more supernatural. The whole way of life in Saltwater seemed a bit depressing. I think I’d be praying to be Snatched one day (sure I’d miss my family, but staying isn’t something I’d be happy with).
I definitely enjoyed reading Stolen. It helped add to my excitement for reading Taken and also may have tempered a few of my expectations (again, not a bad thing). I would definitely recommend Stolen, especially if you haven’t already read Taken, like me.

Nah wtf I’m upping this to 5 stars.
In Taken we meet just a glimpse of who Bree is, barely knowing her as the focus of is Gray and the Laicos Project. We see Bree more as a part of the love triangle and a tool to further develop Gray's character and the story development (I don't know if the book passes the Bechdel test I think lol).
In Stolen we learn a bit of Bree's life before being taken from her home, before being a rebel, and what we see is the story of a kind, strong and broken young woman that made me absolutely love her and root for her in the next instalments.
I'm so grateful that Erin Bowman wrote this, I very much enjoyed it and definitely recommend reading this even as a standalone.

Non so bene il motivo, ma questa short story mi è piaciuta più del primo romanzo.. Ed è riuscita a farmi stare simpatica Bree, cosa che in Taken non era successa.

Nothing special really. The backstory is interesting but nothing that would be crucial to characterize Bree.

I liked the entire backstory of Bree, because I was a bit skeptical of her at the end of Taken, so I'm glad I read this. It really gave a lot if understanding of why Bree is a bit harsh and locks her feelings down, which was a bit painful sometimes to read about.
