The first book in the Sherlock Holmes series starts it off with a bang. I was a bit surprised in the second part of the book where Holmes and Watson were omitted from the story; however, this did nothing to hamper the novel's enjoyability.

the most dreadful 140~ pages ive had to get through, maybe not even 140~ since i skipped most of part 2.

im sorry but this is the second sherlock story ive tried (the first being hound of the baskervilles), both of which typically being celebrated and recommended as good places to start with sherlock. if this is what the 'best' of sherlock looks like im not sure if i have it in me to try the mediocre or worse!

i love mystery, i read christie's poirot novels and absolutely adored them. i thought id similarly enjoy sherlock but by god it's just been miserable!!! ill force myself to trudge through the pages and somehow find myself barely having gotten through 30 or so pages. i just can't bear it im sorry!!! good for everyone who likes sherlock but i just don't think i can do this anymore. ill maybe give one of the short stories a shot to see if i can stomach it when it's shorter, but otherwise i can't say ive had a good time with any sherlock stories so far.
