2020 Book Nerd Your Way.... #17
Did not fit in an available category for the EBN Challenge

Not bad, but it didn't really hold my interest. It was a tough read for me but came highly recommended by someone I know really well. So I gave it a chance.

Two girls hate their lives and go off on an adventure to run away and run into one bad situation after another. Not sure why I didn't enjoy it.... but it just wasnt the book for me I suppose.

2,5 stars, just not for me I guess.

This book definitely makes my list of favorites for the year. Dark, gritty, funny, fresh -- I loved everything about this book. It did a great job of capturing the spirit of female friendship and youth, when you'd do anything to protect your girls and you feel their hurts and joys so deeply. Absolutely loved this book.

Spoiler I don’t need to read about child abuse for “entertainment”.

A riveting story about unlikely friends running away from their equally, though completely different, abusive families. I didn't want to put it down! I always cheered for Winona and Lucille, despite how sketchy their actions may have been.

I enjoyed the exploration of what girls face when they're growing up. Being 18, Lucy and Winona are on the brink of adulthood but are always overlooked as just "little girls" who are helpless. However, they fight back against this. I also noticed the theme of "life isn't what you expect" come up often, right down to the ending.

Nothing extraordinary or particularly unique, it was fine.

Winona and Lucille come from different parts of town and have different terrible home lives. Their friendship is the thing that keeps them going.

There are some great observations about female bodies and class and landscape and I think I kept my distance from this book due to worry about the main characters.
