4.5/5 stars round up to 5 stars for Goodreads.

“Those people were murderers, and they were killing…well, they had killed, Duane. His body steamed in the cool air where he had been ripped open. One of those things was pounding Duane’s head with its fists, cracking it apart like a giant walnut. Brains oozed and hands tore at the break in his skull. Brain matter was snatched and eaten.”

This anthology was a thrilling, suspenseful, and downright scary good time. As someone who is genuinely terrified of zombies, I was anxious for the entirety of this book! Experiencing these stories via audiobook also put this book on another level for me personally. Loved it!

Night of the Living Dead is one of my most favorite horror films of all time so I was excited to start this anthology. As with other anthologies, it's a mix of hits and misses. Majority of the stories are good and did make a mark, while some (just a handful) are bordering on okay to forgettable. As a longtime fan of the zombie genre, it was nice to go back to stories where the people are not aware of what zombies or ghouls are and therefore the scare of the outbreak hits differently for them. Some of the stories capture the terror of not knowing very well.

Hey Survivors,

So, I just got done with this gem the other day and at first I wasn’t feeling it. The first few stories were just okay to me but then they started to pick up and I ended up loving this book. A lot of the scenarios were awesome to read and a few were some I was already working on for my zombie series, it was nice to see how my story and theirs differed.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All In all I would give this book a solid 4, the stories I loved really did save it from getting a 3. Some stories had some questionable content but it’s the apocalypse, you gonna run into people you can’t stand and you’ll never like. I guess being a person of color the slurs and concept of following a racist bugged me a bit more than I’m sure the writer intended but I still enjoyed the ride.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Stories I Really Enjoyed:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dead Man’s Curve⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
John Doe⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Snaggletooth ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Day After⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dead Run⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Lone Gunman⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Live And On The Scene ⁣⠀

It's hard for me to rate this group of short stories. I really enjoyed some, while others I absolutely despised. They ranged from horrendous to very good, and that wide range makes me torn on how to view the complete product. The audiobook was well constructed, and the whole cast brought many of these stories to life. Overall the concept was something I found very interesting, and was excited by. It was nice to see how authors were able to take a single prompt and go in so many varied directions with it. It was also fun as a Pittsburgher, to have so many references to the Pittsburgh region.
