Good as always. A little more psychology based and trying to get into the killers head.

Don't read this book if you haven't read any other Kay Scarpetta book before, or you will be completely lost for the first 200 pages. Even if you are familiar with the series, the first 200 pages is tough to get through. However, it does pick up there, and when the book is over everything makes sense.

Review: I really don't want to review this book. I used to love Patricia Cornwell-Kay Scarpetta books. I mean, I would devour them the second they were released and find myself counting down to the next one. They held very interesting cases and the characters were intriguing. The last few book and this one included have gotten less about the cases and more about the melodramatic life of Kay Scarpetta. I did enjoy the case parts of the story but even those were bogged down with 15 conversations about how rich Lucy is or how insecure Kay is with the men in her life. Marino and Bentley are just shells of the characters they used to be. In fact, the only character I find recognizable and/or likable anymore is Rose. It is almost like the characters have become characterizations of themselves to the point where they are totally unrecognizable (and unlikable) to me. Patricia is a wonderful writer but I just think somewhere back around book 8/9 she somehow got put on auto-drive while writing Kay. I keep hoping the next one is better so I will keep that hope alive.

DNF. I have read many of this series, always completely out of order. I used to buy the paperbacks at the airport. I've always liked them. In fact, think I read a recent one.

Kay seems to be in a really bad place in this one. And maybe if I had traveled there with her I would be okay with getting out of there with her. But for some reason I couldn't handle it. Maybe it would have worked for me in 2008 when it was published. But not for me, not now in 2022. And maybe if it wasn't an audiobook. I don't know. But I finally decided to let it go.

So much better than Predator I almost gave it 3 stars for that alone.

What astonishes me is that 2 years have elapsed since Predator and these 4 irate, uncommunicative, obnoxious people are still somewhat working together. At least they have moved forward in some ways.

I wish Cornwell would be clearer in the explanation of this case. I also wish her explanations of what happened in the 2-year gap were more explicit. Not to mention that the conversations the characters have in the book are overly cryptic.

Why was Otto at the hotel at the end?

Was Kay not supposed to tell anyone about the engagement? Isn't keeping secrets part of how Dr. Self is able to operate so effectively?

Why did Marino's intelligence seem to drop in these recent books?
