✨ first 5 star read of 2023 ✨

“If I discipline my kid, I'm an asshole and a criminal. If I don't discipline that girl, I might just be enabling a future criminal.”

This book was brilliant, I couldn’t put it down I really loved it!
It’s interesting how you can sympathize with with the parents first, how they truly want to help Ashley in the beginning and in a moment everything can turn around.
The writing was obviously amazing with an interesting storyline. The book was gory and brutal, highly recommended if you’re a extreme horror lover!

Wow this book had some substance in it. I felt like it had a purpose and tried to tell as message. It was cruel and reminded me of Sylvia Likens. In the beginning you're like wow she's such a bitch but then you slowly go through her mind and realize she's just a kid. An intelligent one at that who has been raised without support. As a result she lost faith in her guardians. In their head she just became a bitch, when the mom knows full well why she became that way and still pretended to act stupid to it all. Children don't become horrible for no reason, there's always a trigger. Little or big, gradual or all at once. She defintely got her revenge in the end which was unrealistic but really what we needed because her parents were not gunna do what they did to her and trapse to dinner like nothing happened. So much of the book I was thinking, if you'd just acted this way or were nicer that way, they would have let you out or whatever. I realized they had alreadly set their mind to it. It didn't work because their real goal was never her welfare or making her better. It was using their insecurities out on her. To have power over her. And to snuff it out. Also the manipulation her parents did to her brother mannnn. Sick sick sick. But guess what, he wasn't even gunna let her go until she agreed to BJ so fuck him too.

So badly written , so unrealistic thought it would be a deep thought provoking book but he didn’t let you infer anything he just told you exactly what details meant even though it was obvious , repeated hisself. So so bad I finished it just to hate on it.

Quick read and that might be the problem. The speed at which the parents go from kind and caring to flipping their insanity switch is literally overnight. Ashley is also a very normal teenager and her biggest offense isn't even that big. She has valid reasons for hating her parents and acting out. It all seems extremely unbalanced from the start.

Just as insanely as the parents morph into demons, the ending also takes a rapid turn and I didn't like how far it went. The potential for a different ending is totally missed.

This was pretty disturbing, yet I couldn't stop. I HAD to know what happened to Ashley!
